Start Round 1 : with fsc in multiples 2 for the length or width you need for your cowl , scarf or wrap. Join with a sl-st st to the 1st st.
I'm working a cowl - so I worked a long fsc chain in even numbers (or multiples of 2) till I had 48". I then joined the two ends and have worked in rounds.
Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8
Round 2 : dc in the 1st st ;
Keep a count (write it down) of the number of stitches you start with.
You will need to finish with these same number of stitches on your last row of your scarf / wrap. This is especially if you are working a long fsc chain that goes along the length (Idea 1 above)

Row 2 : dc in the 1st st ;
If you are making a scarf, you could attach tassels to the end of your scarf.
