DIAGONAL BLANKET for Hundred Hands
I just
heard about the great work being done by Hundred Hands - making blankets of
love for donation from my great friend Prabha. Coincidentally, my friend
Priya called asking if I’d like some yarn she had that she was not going to
use.
This is
what they say when they say The Universe is always listening. I cannot
begin to tell you how overwhelmed I always feel when things fall into place
this way.

Materials used : Today I’ve used some of our lovely Indian Vardhaman acrylic yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook ; a little embroidery thread ; embroidery needle
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns as well as Oswal 4-ply yarn ; Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn , Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.

Starting
today we’re working on several different granny squares.
For the NGO that I am donating to, each square
needs to be 8” x 8”.
Using the yarn and hook that I have, this is the pattern that I've worked to get it to the dimensions needed for my donation.
For
today’s square, I have chosen one that starts at a corner and is worked
diagonally. If you work these squares in different colours, then you can
work in a beautiful gradient color range - like a rainbow too. Come
along, let’s create some beautiful stuff today.
Please
note that I start all my rows with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.

I found a chart that inspired me for today's patterns. It's worked diagonally into a square. These
are my notes for my original creation.
Start Row 1
: with a magic circle and work 7 dc in that circle. Turn.
Pull
lightly to close but do not join. Leave like a semi circle.
Row 2 : dc in the

Our last
round is just to straighten out the edges and give our square a proper form.
So while
this is not necessary, I found that this helped.
Put your
work down and flatten/stretch it to shape.
Figure
out the four corners and I suggest you place markers in each corner.
So each
corner will have a ch-2 sp and each st will have one sc.
So how do
you work sc along the vertical bars?
The usual
thumb rule is to work 2 sc per dc bar.
For our
corners, we will work (sc ; ch 2, sc).
Last Round
: (Work 23 sc neatly and evenly down the side till the next marker
or next corner ; ch 1, sc in that same corner) ;
rep (to)
all around ;
ch 1 and
join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Fasten
off and weave in ends.
Block as
per yarn instructions.
Once you
have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these
joining methods for a neat join.
