BEADED POTLI BAG
I
have made a few of this sling swag bags, and someone wanted a simpler version..
well, I think this qualifies as simple. .. Well, with a slight twist
Throw
in the beads for a little bling and you have a lovely beaded bag for an evening
out.. or just to carry your mobile phone and keys. The beauty of this bag is that you can make
it in just about any size you want.
So
what’s a Potli ? (पोटली {poTali} = SWAG is the Hindi
equivalent for Swag bag.
We will start our little potli bag from the base and work up to the top – so no drama here.. let’s just start with this cute lil’ bag.

Materials used : polyester purse yarn in cones , with a 3.5 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends ; stitch markers ; embroidery needle ; beads ; zipper.
The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Instructions :
Our
stitch pattern is really easy here. We
will do a set of three sts together – an sc, a dc and an trc all in the same
st, and that’s our pattern all through for the sides of our bag. This gives a small bumpy shell like
effect.
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
We will just play with this
pattern a bit to alternate the shells and add the “Wow” factor.. of course, we
can also bling it all up with beads .. and then it’ll really be “WOW” !
We
start with the base of our potli / swag bag in the usual way and just so we can
use this without lining, I’ve decided to go with a hdc (which is a denser
stitch than the dc) and gives my base a thickish feel too.
Now,
if you decide you are going to line your bag, do go ahead with the dc’s for the
base as this does not affect the pattern at all. In this case then, please substitute
instructions below with dc where ever you read hdc, till your
project base is the size you want for your bag.
Right
and onwards we march..
Start
with a magic circle and 9 sc in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Pull lightly to close the
magic circle.
Round 1 :
2 hdc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Round 2 :
2 hdc in the 1st hdc ;
*hdc in the next hdc ; 2 hdc in the next hdc*.
Rep
*to* till end ;
hdc in the last hdc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
Round 3 :
2 hdc in the 1st hdc ;
*hdc in the next 2 hdc ; 2 hdc in the next hdc*.
Rep
*to* till end ;
hdc in the last 2 hdc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
Round 4 :
hdc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
Round 5 : 2 hdc in the 1st hdc ;

Join with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.

Rounds 4 and 5, increasing by 11 sts every alternate round, ending with Round
5, till you have a base of the size you want for your bag.
Next round : In this last round for the base, sc
in back loops only (blo), so that we get an edge that will not just look good,
but also hold the bag base down flat.
If
you do not want the edge and are happy with the base size here, please end with
Round 4.
Main body pattern for sides / top of potli bag
For
the top / sides of our bag, we will continue without any increase.
Our
pattern repeat is 3.
For
convenience, I am going to re-number our rounds starting once again from
1. Please do not confuse these
rounds with the numbers above. For all
instructions that follow here, they are meant for this top/side section of your
bag only.
Our Shell Stitch here is (sc ; dc ; trc) all in the same st.
Note : To start,
we will do a ch-1 which will not count as a st.
Round 1 :
ch 1 (does not count as a st) ;
*Shell st in the 1st st ;
sk next 2 sts , Shell st in the next st* ;
sk next 2 sts , Shell st in the next st* ;
rep
*to* till end.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Round 2 :
sc in the 1st sc ;
*ch 2, sk next 2 sts , sc in the next sc* ;
*ch 2, sk next 2 sts , sc in the next sc* ;
rep
*to* till end.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Round 3 :
sl-st into the 1st ch-2 sp ;
Shell st in the same 1st
ch-2 sp ;

sl-st to the 1st sc.

Rounds 2 and 3 till your project reaches the height you want.
We
will then do a “hole” round so that we can string in our I-cord to bring it all
together. So let’s finish this off and
we’ll meet soon.
Oh
adding beads : I added beads in a round
after Round 2.
So for bead round : sc in
the 1st sc ;
*ch 1 ; add bead ;
ch 1 and sc in the next ch-2 sp* ;

Right
then.. so once your potli bag is of the length you want, end with Round 3.
Hole row :
dc in the 1st sc ;
*ch 1, sk next shell, dc in the next sc* ;
*ch 1, sk next shell, dc in the next sc* ;
rep
*to* all the way till end.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Now
depending on how thick your cord is, you can use a dc or a trc in this row to
increase the spacing and allow free access for your cord.
So
maybe you should make your cord first and then do this row.
Border :
For
my shelled border, I did a shell round 3 and then the bead round as well.
Fasten
off and weave in ends.
You
will then pass your I-cord in through the openings you’ve made just before that
border row. Now pull your bag closed and
see how the little beading will show beautifully on the top.
Oh, I also added a few beads when making the I-cord as well
