Materials used : Today I’ve used a 4-ply acrylic baby soft yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle ;
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red rose ; Red rose metallic or unbranded knitting cotton as well as Oswal or Vardhaman acrylic yarns
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for free video tutorials of all the stitches used in this pattern.
I
am using the basic square pattern from the free pattern at http://www.sewrella.com/kitty-cat-crochet-granny-square/,
with some
tweaks.
So
here are the basic ideas of what I’ve done.
I have used the general idea from Ashleigh – the centre that you start
with will be the face colour of the animal / character you are working on.
Once
you are done with Rounds 1 – 5 for the face, you will start creating the border
granny square, still working in rounds.
Keeping this in mind, here are my tweaks.
You
can use these patterns to make just a pair of Tom & Jerry motifs. Using the face colour, work till Round 4 or
5, depending on how large a motif you want.
Then go straight to the bottom of the blog for facial feature
information.
In
case you want to make an afghan or blanket, just make as many squares as you’d
like for the length and breadth of your blanket and then using one of the
joining techniques given at the top of this blog, join up to create something beautiful
and unique. Take a look at all the links
at the bottom of this blog for lots and lots of patterns and inspiration. Have a fun crafting session.
Tweaks that I’ve done for my Tom & Jerry granny squares here :
1.
I
started with a centre (grey for Tom and brown for Jerry) circle and then worked
the off- white as my border.
2.
I
worked the first four rounds per pattern – so 60 sts in dc as instructed.
3.
Round
5 : I worked in hdc in each st all around.
4. We now work
the ch-sps round in off white. When working for the off white square, work as
instructed in the original pattern. You
need a total of 12 ch-5 sps all around.
5.
I
worked 5 dc in each ch-5 sp of Round 2 of the granny squares (in white) ; and (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) for each corner ch-5
sp.
6. I then
worked 1 dc in each dc, and then the (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) in each corner ch-3
sp. I just continued till I had a 9” x 9” square. Easy enough, right?
Once
the basic square is done, we need to add in Tom and Jerry’s specific facial features.

For both Tom & Jerry’s eyes : Make two for each
Round 1 :
(Using white) : Start with a magic circle and 10 hdc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (10)
Fasten
off black. Attach white.
Round 2 :
2 sc in the 1st hdc ; 2 dc in each of the next 3 sts ; 2 sc in each
of the next 2 sts ; 2 dc in each of the next 3 sts ; 2 sc in the last st.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (20).
Fasten
off and leave a long tail for attachment.
Repeat for the other eye.
For centre black : Work a magic circle with 8 hdc in
it. Join with a sl-st to the 1st
st. Pull closed. Fasten off and leave a tail for attachment.
OR
use a 0.75 mm black button.
For the centre of the eye :
Round 1 :
(Using black) : Start with a magic circle and 8 hdc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (8)
OR
you could use a 0.75mm black button.
For the nose : (Using black for both Tom &
Jerry)
You
can either use a tapestry / embroidery needle, and work a circle in pink
and
then fill it in with a few straight stitches. OR
You
can make it a 3D one as I have
Round 1 :
Start and a magic circle. Work 6 sc in that circle.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (6)
Round 2 :
2 sc in the 1st sc ; sc in the next sc ;
(2
sc in the next sc ; sc in the next sc) ;
rep
(to) all around.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (9)
Round 3 :
Rep Round 2. (12)
Rounds 4 – 5 : sc in the 1st sc ; and in each sc
all around.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12)
Fasten
off and leave a long tail for attachment.
Using
a tapestry needle, embroider in a white line in the centre of Odie’s black nose
for the shine.
You
could stuff both noses with a little poly-fill. I have opted not to do so.
For both Tom & Jerry’s whiskers :
Use
an embroidery / tapestry needle and embroider in three whiskers on either side.
For Tom’s ears :
Make
two (using same pink and an outline of grey).
Please
read through right to the end till Notes before you start working on their
ears. Cheers.
Now
here’s where you can do something different.
You can decide to stitch the ears down flat, in which case it does not
matter if you have a back to your ear.
In case you want to keep the ears 3D and ‘flappable’, then you need
Tom’s ears to be pink on the inside, and grey on the outside ; and Jerry has a
pink inner ear and a brown outer ear.
You
will work the same pattern for both of your characters, but using pink and grey
for Tom etc. You will then join the ears
along the outer edges and sew the flat edge onto your granny square.
In
case you are working the flappable ears, you will work one set of ears in grey
and one set in pink.
You
will then attach both the ears first, and then attach it to the face.
In
case you are going to stitch the ears down flat, you will work Rows 1 & 2
in pink, and Row 3 in grey for Tom.
Row 1 :
Start with a magic circle and 10 dc in
that circle.
Pull
lightly to close.
Do
NOT join. Turn. (10)
Row 2 :
2 dc in the 1st dc and in each dc till end. Turn.
(20)
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
Notes
1.
If
you are making the non-flappable ear (that you will stitch down), the inside is
pink for both.
2.
For
Tom, work Row 3 with a sl-st in each st all around and then sew it flat down
using the same grey yarn
3.
For
Jerry, work Row 3 with sl-st in each st all around and then sew it down flat
using the same brown yarn
4. If working
3D flappable ear, then first make the pink parts for both Tom & Jerry, and
then work the same pattern for the second part of the ears.
5.
When
attaching pink to grey for Tom, after working Row 2 in grey, keep both pink and
grey together and join with a sl-st or sc through both at the same time. That
way you get a border in grey and get them attached all in one.
6. You will do
Point # 5 for Jerry, using brown.
For Jerry’s ears : Make two
Once
again for Jerry’s ears, if you are making it flappable, you will make one set
in brown and one set in pink. You will
attach one pink and one brown ear first and then attach it down to the face
we’ve made.
In
case you are going to stitch the ears down flat, you will work Rows 1 & 2
in pink, and Row 3 in brown for Jerry.
Row 1 :
Start with a magic circle and 10 hdc in
that circle.
Pull
lightly to close.
Do
NOT join. Turn. (10)
Row 2 :
2 hdc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc till end. Turn.
(20)
Fasten
off and leave a tail for attachment.
And
that’s our Tom & Jerry granny squares in a round .. done!
