Sweet Nothings Crochet: A CUTE LITTLE COIN PURSE

A cute little coin purse - crochet pattern info from Sweet Nothings Crochet

A friend wanted a few small purses to gift her friends, and I thought this was just ideal – it’s small, cute, and timeless .. and of course yet another freebie that I found .. For today's creation I've used some polyester purse yarn in cones with a 3.5 mm crochet hook. So, as always, here are my notes as I work on my own project.

Materials used : polyester purse yarn in cones with a 3.5 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle ; sewing needle ; fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers ; zipper.

For Indians : You could use Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns ; Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum ; Vardhaman as well as Oswal acrylic yarns

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn , Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.

Size made : ~ 6.75” x 5.5” and 5.5" x 4"
You can make this to any size, using any yarn with a suitable hook.

Difficulty level : Easy to intermediate skill level ; Minimal sewing skills.

Extended Single Crochet (e-sc) : hk into st, yo (2 lps on hk), pull through one lp, yo (2 lps on hk),pull through both lps. One e-sc made. (An e-sc is basically an sc on an sc)

Instructions :

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and bag measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

The beauty of this pattern is that you could work with either an sc , an e-sc or dc. So while I’ll write out the pattern as per chart, do substitute whatever stitch suits you, and with each differently sized stitch, you’ll end up with a differently sized pouch ! Isn’t this lovely?

So before we jump into the pattern, let’s see what we’re going to do here.

We start our little purse at the base, and then work our way upwards, slowly decreasing to give it this cute shape.
We will then make a little flap that we will attach at the top.

Right so forward march…

Start with 24 fsc, or as many fsc as you’d like for the width of your little purse. Turn.

We will now start working down this row, and at the end of this row, instead of turning back on this row, we’ll turn around and work under this fsc row, so that we will make a round.

So at the end, turn and we’ll then work on the underside of this fsc row.

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Row 1 : dc in the 1^st fsc and in each fsc till end ; 3 dc in the last fsc ;

Turn and working under the fsc row,
dc in each fsc till the 1^st fdc ;
2 dc in that 1^st (or last for this side) fsc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1^st dc.

Round 2 : 2 dc in the 1^st dc ; dc in the next 23 fsc ;
(2 dc in the next dc ; 3 dc in the next dc ; 2 dc in the next dc) ;
dc in each dc in the next 23 dc ;
2 dc in the next dc ; 3 dc in the next dc .
Join with a sl-st to the 1^st dc.

Now let’s review what we’re doing here on.
The next three rounds are going to be simple and with a st in each st all around – so no increases or decreases.

The 6^th round on, we will be reducing at each corner st.

So here’s my suggestion. Place markers in the corner sts at both ends of this last round.

(So our centre stitch is that the centre dc of the 3 dc in each corner)

Remember though that you need to move your marker every round, even if I do not say so in the instructions.

Round 3 : dc in the 1^st dc ; and in each dc all around.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st dc.

Rounds 4 - 5 : Rep Round 3

Rounds 6 : dc in each dc till one stitch before the marker ;

dc 2-tog over the next 2 dc ; dc in each dc till the last 2 dc ;

dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1^st dc.

Move markers

Rounds 7 - 12 : Rep Round 6.

Rounds 13 : sc in each dc till end.
Join with a sl-st to the 1^st sc.

Start with a magic circle and 8 sc in that circle.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st sc.

Pull lightly to close the magic circle.

rep *to* till last sc ;
ch 1 and join with a sl-st to the 1^st sc.

*ch 3, sc in the next ch-1 sp* ;

rep *to* till last ch-1 sp ;
ch 3 and join with a sl-st to the 1^st sc.

Round 3 : dc the 1^st sc ;
*ch 2, hdc in the next ch-3 sp ; ch 2, dc in the next sc* ;

rep *to* till end ;
ch 2 and join with a sl-st to the 1^st dc.

Round 4 : sc the 1^st dc ;
*ch 5, sk next hdc , sc in the next dc * ;

rep *to* till end ;
ch 5 and join with a sl-st to the 1^st dc.

Round 5 : sc the 1^st sc ;
*7 dc in the next ch-5 sp ; sc in the next sc * ;

rep *to* till end.
Join with a sl-st to the 1^st dc.

Round 6 : dc the 1^st sc ;

*(ch 5, sk next 3 dc ; sc in the next dc) ;
ch 5, sk next 3 dc ; dc in the next sc * ;

rep *to* till end.
Join with a sl-st to the 1^st dc.

Round 7 : sl-st into the 1^st ch-5 sp ,

*(1 sc , 2 hdc , 2 dc) in the next ch-5 sp ;
trc in the next sc ;

[2 dc, 2 hdc, 1 sc] in the next ch-5 sp ;
sk next dc* ;

rep *to* till end.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

FINISHING : Now to sew on this lovely flap onto the top of our little purse.

Place the round flap over the back of your purse (There is no back and front to your purse, as we’ve done it in a round – so you decide which side is the back).

Place the flap in such a way that it overlaps evenly over the front and back – so if you keep the centre line of the flap circle over the top of the purse, you will just about get that right.

Pin the edges and centre of the back of your flap down, and then sew it down neatly.

Great. Now you can finish this off with a neat lining, add a small zipper if needed to the top of the purse and then a little button to hold that flap down.

And voila ! We’re done !
