LATTICED CLUTCH PURSE

I’ve just found this lovely chart and I could not resist it.

It is a pretty easy pattern, as the base bit is all basic stitches and then the flap is this lovely spidery lacy pattern. I love patterns that look all complicated and are so easy to make, don’t you?

Materials used : Indian polyester cone yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends ; stitch markers ; embroidery needle ; zipper.

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros e or unbranded knitting cotton as well

General yarn info : This polyester yarn is available only in India.

The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn ; Hobby Lobby's I-love-this-cotton ; Spotlight's 4-Seasons Marvel & Stallion 8-ply acrylic yarns.

Difficulty level : Intermediate skill level

Instructions :

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

Inspired by the pattern on this link http://postila.ru/post/15853743 , these are my notes as I make my own project. Oh, and below is the lovely photograph that got me all excited and inspired.

The beauty of this pattern is that you could work with either a sc , an e-sc or a dc. There are video links for all of these stitches at the top of this blog.

I love the e-sc and that is what I’ve used.

So we’ll make a rectangle first, all in a simple basic stitch which will make up the base of our purse. Once we have this rectangle of the size needed for our clutch purse (i.e when you fold this rectangle in half you should be happy with the size for purse) , we will work in a continuous movement for the filigree lacy flap.

Part 1 : Body of bag :

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Start with fsc in multiples of 6 + 1 for the width you want for your purse. Turn

Extended Single Crochet (e-sc) : hk into st, yo (2 lps on hk), pull through one lp, yo (2 lps on hk),pull through both lps. One e-sc made. (An e-sc is basically an sc on an sc)

Row 1 : e-sc in the 1^st fsc and in each fsc till end. Turn

Row 2 : e-sc in the 1^st e-sc and in each e-sc till end. Turn

Rep Row 2 till your project is the length / size you want for your clutch.

Part 1 : Flap :

Without a break , after you finish the body of bag, we will continue with the lovely lattice pattern for the flap.

However for convenience, I am going to restart Row numbering from 1

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk);

yo, draw through both lps. One sc made.

*ch 5, sk next 3 sts, sc in the next 3 sts* ;

rep *to* till last 5 sts ;

ch 5 sk next 3 sts, sc in the last 2 sts. Turn

Flap Row 2 : sc in the 1^st sc ;

ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the next ch-5 sp ;

*ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the next sc ;

ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the next ch-5 sp* ;

rep *to* till last ch-5 sp ;

ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the last sc. Turn.

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start,

and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Flap Row 4 : sc in the 1^st dc ;

ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the next sc ;

*ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the next ch-5 sp ;

ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the next sc* ;

rep *to* till last 3 sc ;

ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the last dc. Turn.

Flap Row 5 : sc in the 1^st sc ;

sc in the next ch-3 sp ;

*ch 5, sk next sc, (sc in the next ch-3 sp ;

sc in the next sc ; sc in the next ch-3 sp)* ;

rep *to* till last sc ;

ch 5 sk next sc, sc in the last ch-sp ;

sc in the last sc. Turn

Great. I’m sure you’ve seen how the lattice is working out.

We’ve completed one pattern repeat.

Rep Rows 2 - 5 till you have a flap of the length needed.

The designer has used picots on the last row of the flap.

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3^rd ch from hook). For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5^th ch from hook).

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finish your bag with lining and a zipper as required.

Then attach on the handle.
