So come along, join me as we make two beautiful
crowns for two lovely people.
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red rose ; Red rose metallic or unbranded knitting cotton as well
General material info : I think that any knitting cotton yarn will work splendidly for this project. Of course a metallic yarn and beads will add to the sheen and bling.
Here are sizing charts for general
head sizing :
Stitches used :
Foundation half double crochet (fhdc) : This is an easy way to start a row of hdc without the starting chain row.
Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.
Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Invisible join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the embroidery needle and whipstitch to get an invisible join at https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM
Instruction information
There are two crown patterns in this blog write
up.
For the first free one, I’ve chosen
the cute crown from Ira Rott.
So let’s mosey on over to the free pattern at
The only thing I’d like to add here is check
your gauge and / or stitch count repeat.
If you take a look at the chart provided, you’ll
see that the stitch count is in multiples of 6.
Please read through the instructions fully
before starting your work.
Come along then.. what are you waiting for??
Off you go to the pattern sheet for
the cute lil princess crown. :)
For the 2nd crown / tiara, I found
this chart which looked just right for the mum.
Come along and let’s work on this one, shall we?
Remember to check the head measurements chart
given in the earlier link/pattern sheet and at the top of this blog.
Start : with
fsc in multiples of 15 for the circumference needed for the head.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st fsc,
keeping the chain flat. (Check Note)
At all times, keep in mind the stretch of your
yarn – more the stretch, lesser the number of multiples needed.
Note : Check
out this video on how to keep your chain flat without twisting
Round 1 : sc
in the 1st fsc and in each fsc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st fsc.
Round 2 : sc
in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Now here’s where it gets interesting.
The chart shows the start of the tiara from
the next round, as we’ve created a base with the 1st two
rounds.
If you are using a thinner yarn,
and want a wider base, rep Round 2 till you are happy with the width of your
base.
How do you decide if you are happy? Well, you need to calculate height.
You have worked 2 rounds, and our total
pattern is 8 rounds.
The 1st
2 rounds have been worked in sc, and the next 6 rounds will be worked with dc.
2 rounds of sc = 1 round of dc (in height).
So now calculate how high/wide your crown is
going to be and decide if you want to increase the base. Got it?
I am going to carry on numbering, so please do
not get confused if you have worked more rounds for the base – just carry on
with Round 3, when you are done with the base.
Round 3 : dc
in 1st 4 sc ; ch 3, sk next 2 sc,
sc in the next 7 sc ;
*ch 3, sk next 2 sc, dc in the next 4 sc ;
ch 3,
sk next 2 sc, sc in the next 7 sc* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, sk last 2 sc and join with a sl-st to the
1st st.
Round 4 : dc
in 1st dc ; ch 1, dc in the same dc ;
*ch 2, sk next 2 dc, (dc in the next dc ; ch 1,
dc in the same dc) ;
ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the next 5 sc ;
ch 3, sk next sc, rep (to) once* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, and join with a sl-st to the 1st
dc.
From this round on, we will use a “V”-st which
is (dc ; ch 1, dc) all in the same
ch-sp.
Round 5 : sl-st
into the 1st ch-1 sp ; “V”-st in the same ch-1 sp ;
*ch 2,
“V”-st in the next ch-2 sp ;
ch 2, “V”-st in the next ch-1 sp ;
ch 3, sk next sc, sc in the next 3 sc ;
ch 3, sk next sc, “V”-st in the next ch-1 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, and join with a sl-st to the 1st
“V”-st.
Round 6 : sl-st
into the 1st “V”-st ; “V”-st in the same “V”-st ;
*ch 2, “V”-st in the next dc ;
ch 2, “V”-st in
the next dc ;
ch 2, “V”-st in the next “V”-st ;
ch 3, sk next
sc, sc in the next sc ;
ch 3, sk next sc, “V”-st in the next “V”-st* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, sk next sc and join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 7 : sl-st
into the 1st “V”-st ; “V”-st in the same “V”-st ;
*(ch 2, “V”-st in the next “V”-st) ;
ch 2,
“V”-st in the next ch-2 sp ;
rep (to) once ;
sk next sc and ch-3 sps, “V”-st
in the next “V”-st* ;
rep *to* all around ;
sk next sc and ch-3 sps, and join with a sl-st
to the 1st st.
In our final round we will use a picot, which is
(ch 3, sl-st in the 3rd ch from hk).
How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook). For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
Round 8 : sl-st
into the 1st “V”-st ; sc in the same “V”-st ;
*ch 3, “V”-st in the next “V”-st ;
ch 2, “V”-st in the next dc ; picot + “V”-st in
the next dc ;
ch 2, “V”-st in the next “V”-st ;
ch 3, sc in the next 2 “V”-sts* ;
rep *to* all around,
ending with a sc in the
last ch-1 sp of the last “V”-st.
