After
quite a long break, I’ve made a sling bag.. and when someone ordered our famous orange Cat 🎉🎊 .. Garfield
is .. He is.. ah.. he’s the cutest!
I
have made an Owl Sling bag and thought of Garfield… and Angry bird and all
those other characters that make kids smile.. So keep a close eye out for more.
So
for this bag, I thought we’d do a 3D version – well, that just means that we’re
going to make the elements of this bag separately and then attach them all on…
so we make the base of the bag (face) and then attach on the eyes, ears and mustache.. Sound fun? Come on then,

Materials used : polyester purse
yarn, about 1 cone, with a 3.25 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends ; stitch markers ; embroidery needle ; a small amount of poly fill stuffing (for nose, optional)International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
Skill level : Intermediate to advanced
While the stitches used are easy enough, this is a
bit of a long(ish) project and needs patience.
One will also need sewing skills to attach all the pieces

In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
There are nine parts to this creation - and loads of detail given.
Part 1 : Garfield’s face : Make two using orange
There are several parts to this bag, as we’re
making it 3D. I have indicated which
colours to use, but go ahead and use whichever colour you wish – in case you’re
not interested in making this famous cat, and just going to make a bag.

Part 2 : Garfield ears : Make two using orange
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and 10 sc in that circle.
Pull lightly to close
circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st
sc.
Round 2 : 2 dc in the 1st 2 sc ;
(2 trc in the next sc ; 3 trc in the
next sc ; 2 trc in the next sc) ;
2 dc in each of the next 2 sc ;
rep (to) once.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st
dc.
Round 3 : hdc in the 1st 2 dc ; dc in the next 2 dc ;

Part 3 : Garfield eye lids : Make two using orange

Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog : [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;

Part 5 : Garfield eyes pupil :
Make two using black
This is that little black semicircle inside the
whites of the eye.
So you can embroider
this in as well, but just thought we’d do it a *simpler* way (I hope)

sc ; sc in the last 2 sc.
Join with a
sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 2 : sc in the 1st st and each st all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew in.
Part 8 : Bag strap :
I
made a long fsc chain for my bag strap – nice thin and pretty durable.
If
you want it a little thicker, then work an sc (or hdc) in each fsc of this
chain till you reach the start.

to the two sides of your Garfield bag.

Now here’s where it gets a little bit tricky. We have several components made, and we are
going to build it up in a 3D mode.
So to
make this easy, let’s visualise this first.
The ears are right on the top of the head, just off centre.. simple
enough.
The eyes are the ones that are tricky – so there are three parts to the eye : The orange eye lid (Eyes 1) ; the whites of the eyes (Eyes 2) and the black centres of the eyes (Eyes 3). So we will start off with the top of the orange eyelids and start stitching that down, then work on the whites of the eyes, and then the black of the eyes. Once the whites and blacks are stitched down, you will return to complete the orange eyelids.
The moustache will come on next and you will need
to curl in the edges for that cute Garfield look ;
Finally we’ll put the pert pink nose on. Ok.. so point by point, please follow on
below.
1. Ears : The point that you’ve ended at for the face pieces
is the top right hand corner of your Garfield face. So one ear will be fitted from this stitch. Now we have 14 sc along this top and we will
fit in both the ears here.
2. Fold ear lengthwise and mark the centre bottom stitch. We will use a total of 7 sts to attach the
ear, so 3 sts on either side of this centre marked st.
3. Eyes 1 : We will attach the
eyes in two parts. The orange eyelids
are the top part of the eye and the little white bits will be attached
underneath. Now our eyes have one
straight edge and one curved one – so the straight edge goes along the centre
of the face and the curved one will be along the sides of the face. Place the eyes so that the top of the eye (curve)
is just along and slightly over the top edge of the face. For a 3D effect, use some polyfill to get the
eye-lids to pop out. Now just before you
reach the bottom (i.e side closer to the chin, just above moustache), work on
the white and black of the eye first and then return to this part
To keep my poly fill from seeping out of the gaps between my work, I like to make stocking net balls. I wrap a bit of stuffing into a stocking net and sew the top up to make a ball. I then use several different sized balls for my amigurumi projects.

4. Eyes 2 : We will attach the
whites of our eyes just under the orange eye lid, such that the orange eye lid
will go over the white part of the eye. Before you head back to Instructions of
Eyes 1, please do Eyes 3.
5. Eyes 3 : We will now attach
the semicircular black part of the eye over the whites of the eyes, such that
the top of this black eye fit just under the orange eyelids (See pic)
6. Moustache : The
moustache is a little tricky. So first
find the centre for the moustache and align it with the centre of the face,
just under eyes. Pin the moustache under
eyes and take the sides up along the sides of the face. Now that last dc 5-tog we’ve made, you have
to roll that down towards the chin of your Garfield face and then pin it
down. Do this both sides – pin it all down before sewing it in. Photos attached
7. Nose : Finally you attach
on the nose exactly between the eyes and on top of the centre of the moustache
8. Embroidery : Now for
a little bit of embroidery in black to bring out the eyelids
9. Once you’ve attached all parts, you can now attach the back of your bag
on.
10. You can then attach on your bag strap.
11. For ideas on how to line your bag go here and to add the zipper go here. Ensure
that you line the back of the large ears as well, not only for neatness and
good finish but also to ensure that it doesn’t curl / flop down on itself.
And wow.. just look at what you’ve created. One little kiddo is going to be mighty pleased
