My client chose this pattern making it simpler for me 😆
However, my yarn is not that which has been used for this bonnet.

So what does one do?
Well, the designer has given a gauge – so the smart thing would be to work a swatch and check your gauge.
But even if you do not get gauge, you can work the pattern using the head sizing chart.  (links given at the top of the blog as well)

So I just worked the first set of rounds till I had the circumference I needed for my 4-year old.  I then worked the front peaked-cap bit.  Yes, there is some calculation needed to figure out how far down you bring this front bit – all you need to do is figure out the round neck and work half round neck.  This way the back half of the neck stays uncovered and you just work the peaked bit for the front and it neatly comes down just past the ears.
Of course if you have your ‘model’ with you all you need to do is pop it onto her / his head and check that it is a good cover.

Thank you Erangi for such a cute little bonnet.  I had great fun creating mine, and I do hope you will too.

After I made and sent this bonnet, I found I had miscalculated a bit - and the bonnet did not fit.

1. Hat circumference = measure around the head just above ears and subtract one inch for a nicely fitted finished hat.
2. Crown width = (this is a flat circular top of the hat) you need to divide hat circumference by 3.14 (pi).
3. Hat height = Head circumference / 10 x 4.

So you need to measure circumference of the head (round head measurement) and keep checking the outer circumference of your work.
There is another trick for measuring circumference (without running your measure tape all around the edge of your circle as you are working).
This works for a cap that you are working top down, from the crown of the head.
It works by dividing your round head measure by pi (3.14).
So say your head measurement is 22, divide 22 by 3.14 = 7.
Remember when calculating diameter, you must account for the stretch of your yarn too.
So once the ‘flat portion’ for the crown (or the first few rounds while you are still increasing) of your cap is 7” diameter, you can stop increases and start increasing just the length (without increasing stitches for the round)
Right then, back to the pattern sheet.

So I went back to my drawing board and reworked the number of rounds for the back of the head - and voila ! I got it right the second time around.

free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet , free crochet pattern for a bonnet, Ideas to make it for an older child,

This time I used some baby soft (Indian) Oswal Cashmilon yarn (pink) and the Nako Saten (white) to make this creation.  As you can see in my second attempt, I worked more rows around the back of the head and this worked.  Luckily there's a baby sister who can  use the other smaller creation - so big smiles all around.

Hope you had a fun creative day today.  Do join me again tomorrow for another fun crochet session.  Byeee!
