EASY FAUX CABLE HEADBAND

This is an easy project for a slender headband with a seemingly complicated pattern but it’s really pretty easy.

Materials used : Today I’ve used some (Australian) Birch Creative acrylic yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook.

General yarn info : Todays yarn is not specific for this pattern. Use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this headband to any size.

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros e ; Red rose metallic or unbranded knitting cotton as well as Oswal or Vardhaman acrylic yarns

Difficulty level : Intermediate.

Abbreviations used :

sc : single crochet hdc : Half Double crochet

ch : chain ch-sp : chain space

sp : space rep : Repeat

hk : hook lp (s) : loop(s)

yo : yarn over sl-st : slip stitch

Instructions using U.S terminology

Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.

Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.

Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.

This is a really easy two row pattern and then we work on the faux cabling on the top.

You can make this to any size. You just need to make the first row for the round head measure of the person you are making it for.

The stitch count for today’s pattern is in multiples of 3.

Start Row 1 : with a fhdc in multiples of 3 for the round head measure (or head circumference) of the person you are making this for.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

Round 2 : hdc in the 1^st fhdc and in each fhdc all around ;

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

We have completed the first part of our headband and it is ready to wear right now too. The photo below shows you how it looks with the faux cabling (in front) and the back is without the cabling

So in short, we’re going to work chain stitches all along the surface of our headband and just attach it with sc.

So all we do is work 2 ch and sk 1 st in between on either side of the headband all the way around.

You could choose to work this for just part of the headband (the top part) and leave the bottom part unworked, for a different pattern too.

Round 3 : Only surface pattern : sc in the 1^st st ;

(ch 2, [flip headband upwards] , sc in the st closest to you ;

ch 2, {flip headband away from you} , sk st and sc in the next st on the far side of headband) ;

rep (to) all around

and join with a sl-st to the 1^st st

1. Hat circumference = measure around the head just above ears and subtract one inch for a nicely fitted finished hat.

2. Crown width = (this is a flat circular top of the hat) you need to divide hat circumference by 3.14 (pi).

3. Hat height = Head circumference / 10 x 4.

So you need to measure circumference of the head (round head measurement) and keep checking the outer circumference of your work.

There is another trick for measuring circumference (without running your measure tape all around the edge of your circle as you are working).

This works for a cap that you are working top down, from the crown of the head.

It works by dividing your round head measure by pi (3.14).

So say your head measurement is 22, divide 22 by 3.14 = 7.

Remember when calculating diameter, you must account for the stretch of your yarn too.

So once the ‘flat portion’ for the crown (or the first few rounds while you are still increasing) of your cap is 7” diameter, you can stop increases and start increasing just the length (without increasing stitches for the round)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Block as per yarn requirement, if needed.
