In this pattern I've gone a little beyond the original chart and have created a slightly larger doily - like I said just imagine it and then do it and be amazed!

Round 1 : Start with a magic circle and work 1 dc in it ;
(ch 2, dc in the same magic circle) ;
rep (to) 6 times ;
ch 2 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 2 : dc in the 1st dc ;
(3 dc in the ch-2 sp ;
dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) all around ;
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (16 ch-3 sps)
Round 3 : sc in the 1st dc ;
(ch 3, sk next dc, sc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 1 + dc, sk next dc, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Note : Working ch 1 + dc means you are in the centre of the last ch-3 sp.
If you are not happy with this work ch 3 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st. Then work sl-st and go to the centre of the 1st ch-3 sp and start Round 4.
Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog : [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times. One dc 2-tog made.

Round 4 : Split dc 2-tog over the 1st ch-3 sp and the next ch-3 sp ;
(ch 5, Split dc 2-tog over the last ch-3 sp and the next ch-3 sp) ;
rep (to) all around till the last Split dc 2-tog ;
ch 3 + dc and join to the 1st st.
Note : Working ch 3 + dc means you are in the centre of the last ch-5 sp.

For the next round, we need to start in the ch-2 sp, which is behind us. So for this, I turned my work around and sl-st into the ch-2 sp, and then turned around again to start working the right way.
Whatever way you decide, we start in a ch-2 sp.
Round 8 : sl-st past the 1st ch-2 sp ;
sc in the 1st ch-2 sp ;
(ch 15, sc in the next ch-2 sp) ;
rep (to) all around and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
