EASY MOBILE CROSS BODY BAG

Easy Mobile Cross Body Bag - free crochet pattern info from Sweet Nothings Crochet

This cute cross-body bag has been made for a mobile phone, but it can easily be adapted to make a larger bag too and it is a much-needed daily item and a crocheted bag is a gift of love.  Today's mobile phone bag is worked from the bottom up and can be made to any size.  This pattern is awesome - a really simple pattern that creates this lovely woven effect... and trust me, you will not be able to stop with just one!

I'll add that it looks way cooler than I'm able to photograph it
So you just gotta take my word for it and try this pattern out yourself. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Materials used : Today I’ve used some Indian polyester purse yarn , with a 3.5 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends stitch markers ; embroidery needle.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros or unbranded knitting cotton as well
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

How to turn a foundation Single Crochet row into a round : https://youtu.be/DwkKgtGaJMY

We start with a fsc row and then work around the row and make it a round. The video above makes this all much simpler to visualise too.
What is a crochet slip stitch : https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Start Row/Round 1 : with fsc in multiples of 3. Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Mark the centre st at both ends.

Round 2 : sc in the 1st and each st till the marked st.
3 sc in the marked st ;
sc in each st till the last st ;
2 more sts in the last/1st st and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Note : Ensure that you have sts in multiples of 3

Rounds 3 - 5 : sc in the the 1st st and in each st till end ;
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Note : Measure this height - esp if you want the same height at the top.
So say this is 1" and you want a length / height of about 6" for your phone, then you need to work 5" and leave the last 1" to work in all sc to match the bottom.
You could also work in pattern all the way to the end and work just one round in sc to finish too.
Rounds 3-5 in all sc for the base
Round 6 : (sc ; ch 1, dc) all in the 1st st ;
*sk next 2 sts , (sc ; ch 1, dc) all in the next st* ;
rep *to* till end and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 7 : sl-st into the 1st ch-1 sp ;
(sc ; ch 1, dc) all in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
(sc ; ch 1, dc) all in the next ch-1 sp and in all ch-1 sps till the end ;
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
see how lovely the diagonal pattern looksPattern starting after Round 5
and that's it - our pattern done!
worked with a variegated yarn - pattern shows a little less
same pattern different yarn - effect looks different

Rep Round 7 till you are at the height/length you want for your phone (remember to read the Note after Round 5.

Next Round : sc in the 1st sc ; sc in the next ch-1 sp ; sc in the next dc ;
(sc in the next sc ; sc in the next ch-1 sp ; sc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) all around and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Next Round : sc in the 1st st and in each st till the end ;
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Now this is the base of the phone done and I'm going to give you a few ideas that you can work with depending on what kind of bag you're making
Now before you rush off to make your strap or button closure, please check all the finishing options below.

Option 1 : This is if you want a button closure without a body strap
Before you finish, you can decide if you want a button closure.
If you do, then find and place a marker in the centre of the bag. In the last round of sc, work as many chains as you need to go around the top of your bag and the button. Sl-st back into the same st you started from and work sc all around and join with a sl-st to the 1st to finish your top.

Option 2 : This is if you want a button closure and a body strap
button closurebutton closure

button closure, top finishing and straps
As before you need to place markers. So one for the centre button closure (Marker 1) and two that will mark the two sides (for the cross body strap - markers 2 & 3)
We will start at one side (at Marker 2) and work sc all the way till Marker 1. Then as with Option 1, work the button closure chains and sl-st back in Marker 1.
Continue working sc till your each the marker you started from (so all around) and join with a sl-st to finish. We then work the cross-body strap from here and join it at the Marker 3.

To work the cross boy strap there are several ideas :
1) Work as many fsc as you need for the length of your cross body strap and then attach it at Marker 2.  You can leave it with just a fsc chain or you could decide to work a row of sc or sl-st all the way back to Marker 1.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Foundation half double crochet (fhdc) : This is an easy way to start a row of hdc without the starting chain row.

Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/SEG2UCRfypA

2) Work a fhdc chain for as long as you need for the length of your cross body strap and then attach it at Marker 2. You get a similar width as you do with Option 1 - with just working one row.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

3) Fasten off after you have finished the sc all around the top. Fasten off and weave in ends. We will then work on a cross body strap and attach it later.
Work the easiest I-cord pattern below and then attach one end at Marker 2 and the second end at Marker 3 using yarn and a needle. You can either attach this all along the outside (sides) or from inside. I'd suggest that you attach at least 2" of the strap along the sides for a good strong hold.

Finishing option : You could finish with the sc all around the top or you could add a round of crab stitch or reverse single crochet
finishing on top of the bagsc and then crab stitch or reverse single sc finish
If you decide to do this, you will work the crab stitch and then work Option 1 or 2.
