SAAISHA BEANIE
Beanies are very popular accessories and I think we cannot get enough of them.. what do you think? I've made tons of beanies here but today's set is for some special little warriors. I'm making this set in 100% cotton. Working beanies with cotton is a bit different from working with acrylic or wool as the stretch differs - which changes our calculations a bit. This is a very easy one-row repeat pattern - so do try this one out.
In today's blog, I've given you all ten sizes for the beanie - from preemie & newborn to small adult. There are two sets of patterns for two sizes of preemie beanies too.
In my patterns, I get you to think, just a little bit - but that's half the fun in creativity and making a unique project. With this project, you have a readymade pattern from start to finish in bulky yarn or you do a small bit of calculation and work it with just any yarn and a suitable hook.
Thanks for joining me. Come along, let’s create something beautiful

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me. Cheers.
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size. Using chunky yarn just means that the project zooms ahead that much faster. So if you want a thicker yarn, just use a few strands together.
but I think you could also use Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn
You may just have to tweak the gauge a bit.
Difficulty level :Intermediate.
Sizes made : All sizes from Newborn to Adult beanie
Here is a sizing chart for general head sizing :here or here
Abbreviations used : using U.S terminology
sc : single crochet hdc : Half Double crochet
ch : chain ch-sp : chain space
sp : space rep : Repeat
hk : hook lp (s) : loop(s)
yo : yarn over sl-st : slip stitch
dc : Double crochet
Instructions using U.S terminology
Please notethat I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.
Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.
I have decided to work my beanie with hdc or half double crochet sts. This is just so that there are less spaces between stitches and the beanie is a better fit.You could work with sc too but you'd have to calculate the circumference as the rounds given are for hdc.
I've also made two sizes of preemie caps. Please note that we work that project in all sc and not hdc as we want to keep the spaces to a minimum.
1. PREEMIE BABY CAP :
I give you two patterns - similar but for one single thing - and yet they look so different
SIZE 1 :22cm circumference ; Height from crown to brim :10cm
Single Crochet : Sc :yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M
How to seamlessly crochet in rounds : When working with head wear, this is a really neat way to seamlessly end each round. Here’s an easy video tutorial to show you how to this at https://youtu.be/ISBZK7Du7yE
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and work 10 sc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (10 sts)
Round 2 : Increase Round : 2 sc in the 1st st and in each st all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (20 sts)
Round 3 : Increase Round : sc in the 1st st ;
(2 sc in the next st ; sc in the next st) ;
rep (to) all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (30 sts)
Round 4 : Non - Increase Round : sc in the 1st st & in each st all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (30 sts)
At this point may I suggest we do a circumference check.
My circumference at this point is 22 cm & the diameter of my circle is about 7 cm.
Please scroll all the way down to the end of the blog to see how to check circumference (without measuring all around I mean)
How to measure for circumference : Keep your hook in that last stitch and then use your 'working yarn' to lightly wrap along the edge of the circle (the circumference of the circle) all the way around till you reach the hook again. Unwrap or hold this yarn straight against a measure tape and check the length or circumference of your work at this point.
Rep Round 6 8 times till you have a length of 10 cm (measured from crown to brim) for a preemie beanie.
For the second idea below, the only thing you change in the pattern is to turn at the end of every round. So follow the exact same pattern for Preemie Baby Cap and just turn at the end and voila! a totally different looking project.
May I also add that this cap below is a little 'thicker' or denser than the one above and though its the same sc stitch, it looks a little thicker and heavier.
Personally I think this is a nicer cap as its a bit warmer and denser on the weave.
1A. PREEMIE BABY CAP :
SIZE 2 :24cm circumference ; Height from crown to brim :11cm
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and work 10 sc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12 sts)
Round 2 : Increase Round : 2 sc in the 1st st and in each st all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (24 sts)
Round 3 : Non - Increase Round : sc in the 1st st & in each st all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (24 sts)
Round 4 : Increase Round : sc in the 1st st ;
(2 sc in the next st ; sc in the next st) ;
rep (to) all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (36 sts)
Round 5 : Non - Increase Round : sc in the 1st st & in each st all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (36 sts)
Round 6 : Increase Round : sc in the 1st 2 sts ;
(2 sc in the next st ; sc in the next 2 sts) ;
rep (to) all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (48 sts)
Round 7 : Non - Increase Round : sc in the 1st st & in each st all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (48 sts)
At this point may I suggest we do a circumference check.

Rep Round 7 17 times till you have a length of 11 cm (measured from crown to brim) for a preemie beanie.
and exactly as we've done for the first preemie beanie, if you turn at the end of each round, you will get a completely different looking beanie.
That said, if you turn at the end of each round for each of the beanies below, you will get a different looking pattern too. Of course for our new born beanies we are working in hdc - but do try it out and let me know what you think
2. NEWBORN BEANIE :
Half Double Crochet : Hdc :yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

Please scroll all the way down to the end of the blog to see how to check circumference (without measuring all around I mean)
Rep Round 8 18 times till you have a length of 8.25" (measured from crown to brim) for a newborn beanie.
HOW TO CHECK CIRCUMFERENCE :
To check circumference, Divide the circumference by 3.14 - so for an adult we divide 23"/3.14 = 7.32"
This means that once your diameter (which means across the round you have made) of work is around 7", you stop the increase rounds and start working just the non-increase rounds.
You will then continue working the non-increase round pattern all the way till the length desired (which for this 3-month baby beanie example is 8.75"
Exactly the same thing for all sizes - so for a newborn it is 13.5"/3.14 = 4.2" and work this for a length of 5".
Easy enough, right?
Right so once you have figured out the circumference you can carry on depending on which size you are making it for.
While I will give you the next few rounds, you decide when you are stopping the increase rounds and moving on to the Non-Increase rounds and pattern.
I'd always suggest working a little longer so that you can then make that 'extra bit' a brim if needed.. or the wearer can
Now if you decide to work with more than one color, let's do that neatly
4) Work 1 hdc in each st all around. Then work a few rounds of all fphdc all around
Front post half double crochet : fphdc :Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch of the row below. Here is an easy video tutorial for the fphdc at https://youtu.be/R_dVr9FnBkk
