TEDDY BEAR MOTIF BAG FOR CHARITY
I saw this lovely pin on Pinterest
for a really cute little teddy and thought this was such a cute motif. I had a client who liked the motif a lot, so
I made a few of these motifs in different colour combinations. However, we went a different way with the
blanket, and I was left with these motifs.
Catch me wasting anything, when there’s always a way to ‘use everything’
So I have decided to use these
motifs to jazz up the little bags I’ve been working on. This will make a cute little pencil case for
a little kid.

In this blog I’ve given instructions
on making the little teddy bear motif, with an idea on how to make this into a
blanket or use the motif to jazz up a bag (which is what I’ve done). As usual, lots of choices and decisions for
you.. and loads of fun too.
Here is the photograph that inspired me
General yarn info : This polyester yarn is available only in India.
The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Instructions for a
teddy bear motif (Using U.S
terminology)
We will start with our first motif. I suggest that you use at least two colours –
one for the little teddy bear face and one for going all around, so that the
face shows through. We also need a
little black yarn for the face features.
Right, get your three yarns, two
hands, one hook and let’s start.
Part 1 : Teddy Bear
Motif
We will start our teddy bear
motif from the nose and work out to the ears.
We will embroider in the eyes and mouth later.
Start Round 1 : (Using black) :
with a magic circle and 8 sc in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st
st.
Pull lightly together to completely
close the circle.
Depending on the size of
square you want, use a sc, hdc or dc from the following round. I have used a hdc.
Round 2 : (Using face colour) :
2 hdc in the 1st sc and in
each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st
st. (16 sts)
Round 3 : (Using face colour) :
hdc in the 1st hdc ;
*2 hdc in the next hdc ; hdc in
the next hdc* ;
rep *to* all around
and join
with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
(24 sts)
Round 4 : (Using face colour) :
hdc in the 1st 2 hdc ;
*2 hdc in the next hdc ; hdc in
the next 2 hdc* ;
rep *to* all around
and join
with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
(32 sts)
Round 5 : (Using face colour) :
hdc in the 1st 3 hdc ;
*2 hdc in the next hdc ; hdc in
the next 3 hdc* ;
rep *to* all around
and join
with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
(40 sts)
Round 6 : (Using face colour) :
hdc in the 1st 4 hdc ;
*2 hdc in the next hdc ; hdc in
the next 4 hdc* ;
rep *to* all around
and join
with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
(48 sts)
Our cute little teddy bear face
is finished.
In our following round,
we’ll add in the ears and at the same time start on the outlining shells for
the face.
So we will be attaching the
next colour that you are going to use for the round that goes around the
face. Keep that ready now.
*We will be using
the face colour only for two shells that will make the ears of the teddy
bear.
May I suggest that after you
complete the 2nd ear, you fasten off your face colour yarn, and
weave in that end while working the next colour.
That said, you may decide to
do all of this after you complete the round as well, and this does not affect
the pattern at all.
Round 7 : (Using face colour) : sc in the 1st hdc ;
[ (sk next 2 hdc, 7 dc in the
next hdc) , sk next 2 hdc, sc in the next hdc] ;
(Using next colour) :
rep [to] once ;
(Using face colour) : rep [to]
once ; *Fasten
off face colour and weave in
(Using next colour) :
rep [to] all around ;
join with a sl-st to the 1st
hdc. (8 shells)
OH MY GOD ! Doesn’t this look
like a super cute little flower? Ah well, that’s another idea for you then
Round 8 : (Using next colour) :
hdc in the 1st sc ;
*ch 4, sk next 3 dc, sc in the next
dc ;
ch 4, sk next 3 dc, hdc in the next sc* ;
rep *to* all around
and join
with a sl-st to the 1st st. (16 ch-4 sps)
Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times. One trc made.
Chainless start for Triple / Treble Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of trc.
You should have ended in the sc
to the right of your teddy bear’s right ear
Round 9 : (Using next colour) :
sc in the 1st sc ;
(hdc ; 2 dc ; 2 trc) all in the
1st ch-4 sp ;
ch 2, [2 trc ; 2 dc ; 1 hdc] all in the next ch-4 sp ;
*{sc in the next sc ; 4 sc in
the next ch-4 sp} ;
rep {to} once ;
sc in the next
sc ;
rep (to) once ;
ch 2, rep [to]
once* ;
rep *to* 2 times ;
rep {to} 2
times ;
join with a sl-st to the 1st
st. (square formed)
Last Round 10 : (Using next colour) :
dc in the 1st 5 sts
;
*(2 trc ; ch 2, 2 trc) in the
corner ch-2 sp ;
dc in the next 5 sts ;
[sk sc, dc in the next 4 sc] ;
rep [to]
once ;
sk next sc, dc in the next 5 dc* ;
rep *to* all round
and join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
We’ve completed the basic
square for the cute little teddy bear.
Part 2 : Teddy Bear
Eyes and mouth
The little black circle that
we’d started with has made the nose of the teddy bear. Using a French knot embroidery stitch work
two little knots for the eyes.
From the centre point of the
nose, working down, embroider a small rounded mouth for the teddy bear.
Neatly fasten off and glue down all loose ends of yarn.
Now what are you going to do
with these motifs? Make a blanket for a
little kiddo? Then read on
Part 3 : Joining the
motifs
Use one of the several joining methods for motifs.
Invisible join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the embroidery needle and whipstitch to get an invisible join at
https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM
Part 3 Optional :
Jazzing up a bag
As you know, I’ve been working
on jazzing up bags and have several blogs for this. For this, you’re actually
getting a plastic bag that will then be covered by the motif. So depending on how large your bag is and the
size of your motif, you will work extra rows on either side of the motif to get
it to the size of the bag.
