I
am using a crochet doily pattern to make this potli/swag bag and working this with a silver polyester crochet yarn makes it so much more interesting, doesn't it?
Throw
in the beads for a little bling and you have a lovely beaded bag for an evening
out..or just to carry your mobile phone and keys. The beauty of this bag is that you can make
it in just about any size you want. So
what’s a Potli ? It is the Hindi equivalent for Swag
bag. Today I've used some (Indian) Polyester purse yarn in cones , with a 3.5 mm crochet hook but this yarn is not specific for this pattern. Use any yarn with a suitable hook to create your own crochet doily-inspired potli swag bag.
We will start our little potli bag from the base and work up to the top – so no
drama here..let’s just start with this cute lil’ bag. Thank you for joining me.
In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.
How labels work : All patterns under a similar label can be found together so when you click on the label for say "crochet baby dress pattern", all my baby dress patterns are available - so scroll down to the very bottom and click on "Older Posts" to move onto the next post in the series. Before you reach that you have several other ways to find my blogs including blog links at the bottom of this blog
For your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.
Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest and if you are looking for more bags then come here
All my blogs can be printed. Find the print friendly (green) link on the right of this blog. You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.
Remember that you only print if absolutely essential. Save paper – Save Our Earth. Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation. Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.
To purchase this or similar yarn online, click here to buy your yarns online via Amazon (India). While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.
This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me. Cheers.
This
yarn has a 4-ply or sport ply thickness. If you're using a thinner yarn, read instructions to see how you can work that in.
You can make this project with any yarn and a hook that suits it.
Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.
Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8 Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
For
this lovely doily inspired potli bag, I’ve used the pattern (in part) from this
free link.. in part because I stopped at the point when I thought I had a large
enough doily to make this potli/swag bag.
Get the free pattern at here
So I've made two of the same doily and then joined the sides.
Now in case you are using a slightly thinner yarn, you just work the pattern a little more till you get to the size you want for your potli bag.
When joining, I just left one portion open along one end (large enough for me to squeeze my hand in).
I then made a long cord using fhdc (lazy me) and slipped the cord (through the holes) of the last round - in such a way that when you pull the cord it tightens and closes the bag and then you can sling it on your shoulders.
Check the link below for a very easy I-cord as well.
Go
crazy. Have fun.
