LOVELY DOILY INSPIRED POTLI BAG

free crochet doily pattern, free crochet potli bag pattern, free crochet swag bag pattern,
I am sure using a doily pattern to make a bag and working this with a silver polyester crochet yarn makes it so much more interesting, doesn't it?
Throw in the beads for a little bling and you have a lovely beaded bag for an evening out..or just to carry your mobile phone and keys.  The beauty of this bag is that you can make it in just about any size you want.

So what’s a Potli ? It is the Hindi equivalent for Swag bag.
We will start our little potli bag from the base and work up to the top – so no drama here..let’s just start with this cute lil’ bag.

Materials usedPolyester purse yarn in cones , with a 3.5 mm crochet hook
This yarn has a 4-ply or sport ply thickness. If you're using a thinner yarn, read instructions to see how you can work that in.
You may want to add beads , pearls or shells
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red rose ; Red rose metallic ; 4-ply knitting cotton or  unbranded  knitting cotton ; Doli knitting cotton ; jute yarn as well as Oswal or Vardhaman acrylic yarns
Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn ; Lily Sugar 'n Cream ;
You can make this project with any yarn and a hook that suits it.

free crochet doily pattern, free crochet potli bag pattern, free crochet swag bag pattern,
For this lovely doily inspired potli bag, I’ve used the pattern (in part) from this free link.. in part because I stopped at the point when I thought I had a large enough doily to make this potli/swag bag.

Get the free pattern at here

So I've made two of the same doily and then joined the sides.

Now in case you are using a slightly thinner yarn, you just work the pattern a little more till you get to the size you want for your potli bag.

When joining, I just left one portion open along one end (large enough for me to squeeze my hand in).
I then made a long cord using fhdc (lazy me) and slipped the cord (through the holes) of the last round - in such a way that when you pull the cord it tightens and closes the bag and then you can sling it on your shoulders.
Check the link below for a very easy I-cord as well.

Go crazy.  Have fun.
