FLORAL HAIR NET
If you have been following me, you’ll know that I made a simple hair net a few days back. I then added a bead and jazzed up the simple creation.
I’m back today with a simple version (without beads) but with a fuller design.
Thanks for joining me. Come along, let’s create something beautiful

Materials used : Today I’ve used some unbranded 4-ply knitting cotton yarn with a 3 mm crochet hookGeneral yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
; a 4” cardboard round cut-out ; a good elastic (rubber band) that goes around the pony tail of your child (so say about 2.5 - 3” with a good stretch), bead for the centre.
Difficulty level : Intermediate.
Stitches used :
Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Abbreviations used :
sc : single crochet dc : Double crochet
ch : chain ch-sp : chain space
sp : space rep : Repeat
hk : hook lp (s) : loop(s)
yo : yarn over sl-st : slip stitch
dc 3-tog : Double crochet 3-together
Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.
Please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.
For today’s pattern we’re going to have a few general notes.
This hair net can fit almost all bun sizes.
The final size is about 4” and this should work for a tiny to medium sized bun. For an extra large bun, you just need to work a few more rounds.
As this is intended to be a floral pattern, I’ve used a multi colored pink yarn for the centre and then worked black for the back portion.
Instructions
Starting at the very 1st round, we will be working dc 3-tog in the magic circle.
In case you find this too hard, may I suggest you start with the magic circle and work 6 sc in it. Join to close. Then in your next round, work what we’re working here in Round 1 – so in your case, you will work the dc 3-tog in each sc and then work the pattern as given.
All you replace is that instead of working it in the magic circle, you’re working it in each sc all around. Got it?
I have started with the variegated pink yarn for the 1st three rounds.
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and work a dc 3-tog in the magic circle ;
(ch 2, dc 3-tog in the same magic circle) ;
rep (to) 4 times ;
ch 2, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
(six dc 3-tog ; six ch-2 sps)
Round 2 : Increase round :
sl-st into the 1st ch-2 sp ;
ch 2, dc 3-tog in the same 1st ch-2 sp ;
(ch 2, dc 3-tog in the same ch-2 sp) ;
*[ch 2, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp] ;
rep (to) once* ;
ch 2, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
(12 dc 3-tog ; 12 ch-2 sps)
Round 3 : Increase round :
sl-st into the 1st ch-2 sp ;
ch 2, dc 3-tog in the same 1st ch-2 sp ;
*[ch 2, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp] ;
(ch 2, dc 3-tog in the same ch-2 sp) ;
rep [to] once* ;
ch 2, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
(18 dc 3-tog ; 18 ch-2 sps)
I have changed yarn at this point.
So fasten off the first color and add in black.
Round 4 : sl-st into the 1st ch-2 sp ;
(ch 3, sk next dc 3-tog, sc in the next ch-2 sp) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 1 + hdc and join to the 1st st.
This ch 1 + hdc ending ensures that you are in the centre of that last ch-3 sp.
In case you find this too hard, please just work a ch-3 and join to the 1st st.
You will then sl-st into the 1st ch-sp to start.
For convenience, may I suggest you place a marker from here on and move your marker at the end of each round.
Round 5 : sc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
(ch 3, sc in the same next ch-3 sp) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 1 + hdc and join to the 1st st. (18 ch-3 sps)
Rounds 6 – 8 : Rep Round 5
At this point, your work should be around 4 ½” diameter, which is about what one needs for a hair bun.
If making this for a larger bun, then you need to increase once more and work two more rounds without increase (which means a total of 11 rounds for a big bun)
Note : The other way you could increase the circumference, is to work ch-5 sps (instead of ch-3 sps) from Round 4 on till the end.
Cut a 4” circle in cardboard or stiff paper.
Place your work over and around the disc and see if it covers the top and nearly covers the bottom. Stretch your work to make this work well. If it does cover with just a small gap, you’re ok.
Now comes the fun part.
We need to attach on the elastic.
So hold your elastic against that last round, and work sc all around looping it around your elastic as well as the bun stitches.
Note that when working with elastic, you will need to stretch the elastic a bit and ease your stitches around as you work.
2nd Last round : We work 2 sc in each ch-sp all around and join with a sl-st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
In case you have worked ch-5 sps, please work 3 sc per ch-5 sp. See if this works for you. If not, work a combination of 3 sc in one ch-5 sp and 4 sc in the next.
Remember that what is more important is the length and stretch of your elastic.
In the following round, I found that if we are using thicker yarn, we need less stitches (obviously) to bring the circle close.
So we hold the elastic near the first st, and work the first stitch into both the elastic and your hair net.
Work 1 sc in each sc all around, stretching the elastic gently as you work all around.
Join to the 1st st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Finishing :
Remember to turn your hair net over and fasten off that first starting yarn and glue all ends down.
As this is a hair net and the last round needs stretch, remember to glue just the end of that final yarn.
Do not glue too long a length, as it reduces stretch.
.. and if you work this whole project in one color yarn, here's what that looks like ...
Finally remember to share this blog post and remember to share your photos of this project on Facebook. I’d love to feature your photos on my FB page. Cheers.
