GRANNY SQUARE 2 for Hundred Hands
If you have been following me, you know that I am in the middle of making squares for a donation called Blankets of Love.  All we need to do is make 8” x 8” squares (20 of them make one baby blanket of 32” x 40”) and send it off locally (i.e. within India) to help spread smiles.  Do go and check out their Facebook page by the same name (Hundred hands or Blankets of Love) to see how you can join in too.
And thank you all for joining me in spreading smiles.

As I started on my journey, I was gifted one set of yarn which I made a blanket with and managed to make 62 squares as well.  I was talking about this donation to a friend, and she asked if she could send me some of her unused stash.. Of course I jumped at that, and I could hardly believe the large parcel that landed the very next day!  Thank you so much Nazneen for your awesome contribution :)

The yarn for this full set of squares are from my wonderful friend, Nazneen.  I am making and donating this set on her behalf, as she is tied up presently.

Thank you for joining me.

Materials used : Today I’ve used local Vardhaman DK/ 4-ply acrylic with a 4.5 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends

This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Oswal acrylic yarns

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

General yarn info : I’d say you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this lovely project.

For today’s square, once again, I have chosen one that starts at a corner and is worked diagonally.  If you work these squares in different colours, then you can work in a beautiful gradient color range - like a rainbow too.  I have used five shades of pink for my creation.

This is a really simple one row repeat pattern.
Come along, let’s create some beautiful stuff today.

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for free video tutorials of all the stitches used in this pattern.

I am sure there are several such mitered diagonal squares out there - but as we needed 8” squares specifically, this is what I have done. These are my notes for my original creation.

Now you can work this whole pattern in one colour - but it looks fantastic when worked with several colours.  So here are a few videos to see how to neatly change colours

How to change colors seamlessly :  https://youtu.be/fRzSBja9jno
How to carry your yarn when using two colors : https://youtu.be/NuascBU3pxQ

How do you get it looking fantastic ?
1.   Find colours that match
2.   Place your colors in order and check the color gradients
3.   Do not panic if you run out of one color - just figure out which color works and increase the number of rows - ensuring that you get the total number of rows (from start to end) right.

And off to the pattern …

Start Row 1 : with a magic circle and work 3 dc in that circle.  Turn.
Pull lightly to close but do not join.  Leave like a semi circle.  (3 sts)

Row 2 : dc in the 1st dc ;
(2 dc in the next dc ; ch 1, 2 dc in the same dc) ;
dc in the last dc.Turn. (6 sts)

Row 3 : dc in the 1st 3 dc ;
(2 dc in the next ch-1 sp ; ch 1, 2 dc in the same ch-1 sp) ;
dc in the last 3 dc.Turn. (10 sts)

And this is it.. Our pattern D..O..N..E !
You just repeat Row 3 till you have the size needed for your square.
As we need to work a 8” x 8” square here, I found that with my yarn / hook and tension, I could achieve that easily in 14 rows.

So let’s see what Row 4 looks like?

Row 4 : dc in the 1st 7 dc ;
(2 dc in the next ch-1 sp ; ch 1, 2 dc in the same ch-1 sp) ;
dc in the last 7 dc.Turn.

So you work 1 dc in each st till the ch-1 sp ; work (to) in the ch-1 sp and then 1 dc in each dc till end.  Easy huh?
And off you go :)

Remember to fasten off and weave in ends at the end of each square for ease in finishing.
May I also suggest that you block your squares before joining (as per yarn instructions).

Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.

Single crochet to join :  https://youtu.be/6FXoW_47_dI
