Materials : I have used our Indian Oswal Cashmilon 3-ply yarn (used 2 held together for thickness of the central portion. You could use 4-ply or sport ply, but I love to fool around with yarns). For the petals I’ve used a combination of 4-ply and DK ply yarn that I had in hand. Just for colour and a difference, I’ve added two colours in the petals.. single color would work too!! Great stash buster, and would make a lovely variegated flower too… Go ahead, create.. go wild.. enjoy !! Used a 4 mm crochet hook.
I opted to use acrylic as I am making this for a little girl.
General yarn info : This polyester yarn is available only in India.
The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn ; "I-love-this-cotton" from Hobby Lobby

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
So here's what we're going to do. We're working a large centre for the flower to start and then we work petals all around it.
You can make this to any size, but remember that when you finish Part 1, you need to have stitches in multiples of 3
May I suggest that the first time you make this project, using whatever yarn with a suitable hook that you have on hand, make it per pattern and then you can increase or decrease the Part 1 circle.
Part 1 : Centre of flower
Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro
Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
Our stitch count is in multiples of 3.
Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and 12 sc in it.
Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (12 sc)
Round 2 : 2 sc in each sc around.
Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (24 sc)
Rounds 3 - 4 : sc in each sc all around.
Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (24 sc)
Round 5 : *sc in 1st sc, 2 sc in next sc* ;
rep from * to* all around.
Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (36 sc)
Round 6 : sc in each sc around.
Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (36 sc)
Round 7 : *sc in 1st 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc* ;
rep from * to* all around.
Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (48 sc)
Round 8 : sc in each sc around.
Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (48 sc)
Round 9 : *sc in 1st 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc* ;
rep from * to* all around.
Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (54 sc)
Round 10 : sc in each sc around.
Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (54 sc)
Stop and check your width (diameter).
I have a diameter of about 12 cms and am stopping now.
IF you want a larger purse, continue increasing the diameter you want.
Remember our stitch count is in multiples of 3.
Also remember that the stitch count is just the centre of your flower.
We still have petals to come.
Part 2 : Petal Instructions
Change to the yarn colour you want for the petals.
I will restart round numbering for convenience.
So what are we doing now ?
We're working off the centre of the flower, and working a long chain (ch 12).
We then work back along this chain to the centre circle.
We will then work along the centre circle to get to the next chain. What we are making right now will be the centre line of each petal, so you may want to make these in a contrast colour.
We will now work along the petal (chain) we’ve just created, going up one side, and down the other in dc’s all the way around.
You will make one petal every third sc so you get evenly spaced petals , so when starting with 54 sc you will end with 18 petals.
Petal Round 1 : sc in each sc around.
Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch. (54 sc)
We will now make the petals.
Petal Round 2 : *ch 12, Turn and sc in 2nd ch from hk,
sc in each ch till end (till the flower centre) (11 sts) ;
sc in the same st (from where you started this ch) ;
sc in the next 3 sc (in the centre of the flower)* ;
rep from *to* till end.
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Petal Round 3 : dc in the 1st sc and in the next 9 sc ;
6 dc in the last sc ;
(Now turn your work 90° and work down the petal),
dc in each of the next 10 st till end ;
sk next sc, sc in the next sc (of flower centre) ;
*sk next sc, dc in each sc of the next 10 sc ;
6 dc in the last sc,
(turn your work 90° and work down the petal) ;
dc in each of the next 10 sc till end ;
sk next sc, sc next sc (of flower centre)*;
rep from *to* till the last petal.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
You have completed one side of your flower purse.
Rep all these instructions to make the back of the flower purse.
Part 3 : Joining Ideas
Joining is in two parts.
You have two sides, and the petals are unattached , flapping away merrily!
In the first part we will join the petals of one side together, and in the second part we will join the two flowers together (i.e back and front of purse). Easy enough, right?
If you plan on lining the bag, then once you have your petals attached, line it and then join the two halves.
Take a look at these three joining methods and choose what suits you best.
Invisible join : Here’s a quick tutorial on how to join using the embroidery needle and whipstitch to get an invisible join at https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM
Join Part A
First let's take a look at our work.
There are two parts to these instructions. Please read through first.
We will start at the base of one of the petals, and join it to the next petal, working along the right hand side of each petal side.
You are going to attach the petal almost halfway to the top, then round off the petal (without joining to another petal), and on the way down, you will once again join the two neighbouring petals.
Once you have joined two petals, you will fasten off and re-attach for the next 2 sets of petals.
1) Hook into the 1st dc (near base of petal), sc in that dc, and then sc into the 1st dc at the base of the petal to it’s right hand side
2) Now turn and sc into the next dc on the 1st petal, and then sc into the next dc on the petal to it’s right hand side
3) Continue one sc each into the two petals till the 6th st ; s(i.e stopping just at the 6 dc of the petal) ; sc in the next 13 sc, (and that is up one side and then down the side of the same petal) till you are 6 dc away from the end of this petal ; sl-st in the next 6 sts till the end ;
4) Repeat from 1 – 3 till you’ve finished the whole flower, ensuring that you leave the last two petals free – i.e one side each of the last two petals do not get attached, and this is the opening for your cute flower purse. However, I’d suggest we sc in each dc down this last petal, and then up the side of that first petal, so we have a nice finished edge. Fasten off and weave in ends.
5) Repeat all these actions for the 2nd half of your bag as well.
Part 4 : Lining ideas
I’d advise you line your bag for each side individually, as I feel that’s easier .. if you do decide to line your bag, that is.
OR place your flower flat on the ground.. and using the centre as a pivot, measure the diameter to the ends, leaving the last rounded part out (which is the top 6 dc).. so if you leave this part out, you will get an even circle.
Cut out two rounds of this diameter, and join it to this side. When we’re joining our two flower sections together, we will only be using the top 6 dc, so our cute purse will be neatly lined by then, and we don’t need to fumble with it later.
I thought this was a great idea.. what do you think?
So I’ve roughly sketched what I mean.. and it’s not to scale, but I’m sure you’ll understand what I mean.
