Materials used : Today I’ve used some 4-Seasons Stallion 8-ply acrylic yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook.

General yarn info : Todays yarn is not specific for this pattern. Use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this headband to any size.

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros e ; Red rose metallic or unbranded knitting cotton as well as Oswal or Vardhaman acrylic yarns

Abbreviations used :

sc : single crochet hdc : Half Double crochet

ch : chain ch-sp : chain space

sp : space rep : Repeat

hk : hook lp (s) : loop(s)

yo : yarn over

fhdc : Foundation Half Double crochet

Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.

Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.

Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.

For today’s pattern you have no stitch count.

Just work as many stitches as you need to go around your head (circumference)

It doesn’t matter if you have an even or uneven number to start for this pattern to work. How easy is this, huh?

The only thing is, as always, I like to start my work with the chainless foundation stitches.

So I started with foundation half double crochet or fhdc.

Don’t worry – there’s a video tutorial for this too just at the top of this blog.

Start Round 1 : with fhdc and as many sts as you need to go around your head.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

From now on, we will work in rounds and we will work the Camel stitch in hdc.

Round 2 : hdc in the 1^st st ;

Camel st in hdc in the next st and in each st all around ;

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

Rep Round 2 till you have the width you need for your headband.

As we’re cinching it, a wider headband shows this finish a lot better.

My client wanted the cinched finish with a narrow headband – so that’s what I have done.

Last Round : hdc in the 1^st st ;

and in each st all around ;

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

As you can see, this is a beautiful headband already, and you could probably wear it just like this.

Basically you need to cinch the top bit of your headband. Using an embroidery / tapestry needle and yarn, pass your needle to and fro through the camel stitch (which is really easy as they’re already standing up for you) and pull tight. All you need to remember is to weave through one set of stitches and weave back through the adjoining set of stitches. Pull tight at the end of every row.

If you are working with a wider headband, I would suggest that you turn the headband over and work the same cinching lines through the bottom as well – for a neat, tighter finish.

1. Hat circumference = measure around the head just above ears and subtract one inch for a nicely fitted finished hat.

2. Crown width = (this is a flat circular top of the hat) you need to divide hat circumference by 3.14 (pi).

3. Hat height = Head circumference / 10 x 4.

So you need to measure circumference of the head (round head measurement) and keep checking the outer circumference of your work.

There is another trick for measuring circumference (without running your measure tape all around the edge of your circle as you are working).

This works for a cap that you are working top down, from the crown of the head.

It works by dividing your round head measure by pi (3.14).

So say your head measurement is 22, divide 22 by 3.14 = 7.

Remember when calculating diameter, you must account for the stretch of your yarn too.

So once the ‘flat portion’ for the crown (or the first few rounds while you are still increasing) of your cap is 7” diameter, you can stop increases and start increasing just the length (without increasing stitches for the round)

Block as per yarn requirement, if needed.
