GRANNY SQUARE 6 for Hundred Hands

GRANNY SQUARE 6 for Hundred Hands
The diamond pattern

If you have been following me, you know that I have been merrily making squares for a donation called Blankets of Love.  All we need to do is make 8” x 8” squares (20 of them make one baby blanket of 32” x 40”) and send it off locally (i.e. within India) to help spread smiles.  Do go and check out their Facebook page by the same name (Hundred hands or Blankets of Love) to see how you can join in too.
And thank you all for joining me in spreading smiles.

As I started on my journey, I was gifted one large bag of yarn.  I added my own stash to that and I have managed to make a diagonal blanket managed to make 66 squares as well. Thank you so much Priya for your awesome contribution.

This is my last blog for this donation for now.  All the squares are packed in sets of 20 and ready to go.

Materials used : Today I’ve used local 4-ply
Oswal acrylic with a 4.5 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends

This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Skill level : Intermediate
This pattern uses several yarn colors and one must know how to change and work with several coloured yarns simultaneously.

Size made : 8” x 8”

For today’s square, I have used a basic granny pattern inspired by the pattern at http://handmadeparis.com/beautiful-blanket-from-granny-squares/

Sweet Nothings Crochet free crochet pattern blog, free crochet pattern for a diamond granny square, photo of the granny squares,

As you will see, it is the basic pattern, but the color choice and then the joining of the squares (as diamonds) made it so different.

Now while I am going to join my squares the regular way (i.e as squares and not diamond-wise), let’s see if we can get something spectacular with these bright yarns.  Come along, let’s create some beautiful stuff today.

Sweet Nothings Crochet free crochet pattern blog, free crochet pattern for a diamond granny square, photo of the granny squares,

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for free video tutorials of all the stitches used in this pattern.

Now while you can work this whole pattern in one colour, you get this fantastic effect only when worked with several colours.
So here are a few videos to see how to neatly change colours

How to change colors seamlessly : Here’s an easy video tutorial to show you how to change from the Main color to the Contrast or second color of yarn seamlessly.  View it at https://youtu.be/fRzSBja9jno

How to carry your yarn when using two colors : Here’s an easy video tutorial to show you how to carry your yarn along when working with two colours.

At the completion of each round after a color change, fasten off and weave in all ends.
May I also suggest that you block your squares before joining (as per yarn instructions).

Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
With the four color combination of colours, we have several possibilities for our blanket.  Place all your completed squares down and play with the color combo first before starting to join.
Have a creative time.
