CATHERINE WHEEL BLANKET

Catherine Wheel Blanket - a Free Crochet Pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet

CATHERINE WHEEL BLANKET

Thank you for joining me as I make this colourful Catherine Wheel Blanket.
This is a gorgeous free crochet pattern and it would work with almost any yarn, using a suitable hook.  I've worked with acrylic yarns today and I totally love the end product - as does my client.  I’d say this is truly a must-try pattern.

The beauty of this pattern is that it is repetitive, so once you get the pattern going, it's not too hard.  It has post stitches which gives it the lovely feature - but that's what it makes a really soft and almost bulky end product... so come on along and let’s work on today’s pattern together.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used 16 (100 gm) balls of soft 8-ply Stallion acrylic yarn with a 4.5 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends stitch markers ; embroidery needle.
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For Indians : You could use Oswal ; Vardhaman acrylic yarns, as well as  Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic ; 4-ply knitting cotton or  unbranded  knitting cotton
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
Difficulty level : Medium to Advanced Skill level.

Pattern Instructions (Using U.S. terminology)

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

In our blanket today, we start with a magic circle and work from the centre outwards.

The pattern is worked as a square - so the regular blanket sizings don't actually work here. I've made a blanket to fit a queen sized bed (60' x 60")

I've been inspired by this free pattern https://www.favecrafts.com/Crochet-Afghans/Bold-and-Beautiful-Catherines-Wheel-Crochet-Throw

Magic circle : https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

So instead of the chain 8 circle, I started with a magic circle. I feel that this gives a neat closed circle.

The other stitches used are

Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times.  One trc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/A0y4BbgDTbs

Chainless start for Triple / Treble Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of trc.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/f42MO0cGYC0

Front Post Double Crochet : fpdc : Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch of the row below.

How to work the fpdc :  yo, hk into sp between posts of st from row below – going from back of stitch, around st and into the front of the st ; yo, pull yarn through the sps (3 lps on hk), (yo & pull through 2 lps) twice.  One fpdc complete

Back Post Double Crochet : bpdc : Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch of the row below.  Here is an easy video tutorial for the bpdc at https://youtu.be/l9Nt3miOs3s

The pattern uses front and back post treble / triple crochet stitches. So instead of yo, we wrap yarn twice around hook before working the post stitch.

After having finished the pattern, I felt that I could have used dc ; fpdc and bpdc instead of triple stitches. I felt that the triple stitches created spaces that double crochet stitches would not have had. The flip side is that using triple stitches means that the pattern advances pretty fast. Like I mentioned before, once you get the pattern going, it is an easy enough repeat.

and before you go, let's see different ways we can use this fantastic creation ...

Like I also mentioned before, this is a square pattern - but I'd suggest you look at blanket sizing anyway just to get a general ball park for sizes.
