FAUX CABLE COWL

Faux Cable Cowl - a Free Crochet Pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet

FAUX CABLE COWL

The Faux Cable Cowl has a matching pattern for a set of beanies.  This pattern looks complicated but it's a simple play with stitches.  You can make today's project into a cowl , scarf or wrap.

This project has a matching beanies (in 3 sizes) at   https://shyamanivas.blogspot.com/2021/07/faux-cable-beanie.html

For Indians The yarn I’ve used is similar in thickness to our Vardhaman Oswal  acrylic yarns  or Laura knitting cotton .
You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.
but I think you could also use Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn

Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.
Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.

For today's pattern, we work a mock or faux cable that looks complicated but just requires a little patience & a little calculation.

Using this chart that I found on the net, which I adapted for the beanie - and now for this matching cowl. I've changed the pattern from this chart a wee bit, using hdc instead of sc.  This chart, therefore, is for reference only.

Chart for the Crochet Faux Cable Cowl

Stitch Detail for the Faux Cable Cowl

The stitch count for our pattern today is in multiples of 7 + 4
Start with fsc (foundation single crochet) in  multiples of the stitch count for the width of your cowl, scarf or wrap

If making a cowl or scarf, I'd work a width of about 8"
For a wrap I'd say a width of about 19 - 20"

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Start Row : with as many fsc as you want for the width of your project in multiples of 7 + 1
Note : Keep a note of how many sts you started with
I started with 29 fsc = 8"

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Row 1 : Front of project
hdc in the 1st st ;
*(ch 1, sk next st, hdc in the next st) ;
rep (to) 2 times / or twice ;
ch 12, hdc in the next st* ;
rep *to* till end. Turn

When we worked out beanie, we worked in rounds, so we kept the ch-12 in front of our work all the time.
Here we're working in rows, so we need the ch-12 to show in front so when working along the front, we will keep the ch-12 sp in front of our work, but when working along the back, we will push the ch-12 sp away and work in the hdc.  Got it?

In the following row, you will push your ch-12 sp  way to the front of your work, and work in the st (hdc)

Row 2 : Back of project
hdc in the 1st st ;
*hdc in the next ch-1 sp ;
ch 1, sk next st, hdc in the next ch-sp ;
rep (to) once ;
{fold ch-12 sp in front of work & work into the hdc at the base }, hdc in the next 2 sts* ;
rep *to* till last ch-sp ;
hdc in the last st. Turn

Row 3 : Front of project
hdc in the 1st st ;
*(ch 1, sk next st, hdc in the next ch-sp) ;
rep (to) once ;
[ch 1, sk next st, hdc in the next st] ;
{fold ch-12 sp in front of work & work into the hdc at the base }, hdc in the next st* ;
rep *to* till end. Turn

Row 4 : Back of project
hdc in the 1st st ;
*hdc in the next ch-1 sp ;
ch 1, sk next st, hdc in the next ch-sp ;
rep (to) once ;
{fold ch-12 sp in front of work & work into the hdc at the base }, hdc in the next 2 sts* ;
rep *to* till last ch-sp ;
hdc in the last st. Turn

and this is what makes this an Advanced level pattern - looping and working the hdc behind the loops.
Now if you've worked on the beanie, you'll know what this means.

Row 4 explanation for the Faux Cable Cowl

Row 4 - Part 2 explanation for the Faux Cable Cowl

In the following row we will work the next row of ch-12 sps, and at the same time, we will loop up / tie up the earlier ch-12 sp.
So finally the 1st set of ch-12 loops stay flat against your work, and you reach under the loop to get the 2 hdc in the centre.
So with the 1st hdc you will work the next set of ch-12 and with the 2nd hdc you will lock the 1st ch-12 loop in.

Once you get this going, the rest is all repeat and easier

Row 5 explanation for the Faux Cable Cowl

Row 5 : Front of project : Looping the ch-12 row :
hdc in the 1st st ;
*(ch 1, sk next st, hdc in the next ch-sp) ;
rep (to) once ;
{keep the ch-12 sp against your work & work into the hdc with the ch-12
behind the hdc },
[ch 1, sk next st, hdc in the next st] ;
rep {to} , ch 12, hdc in the next st * ;
rep *to* end. Turn

and that's our pattern done !

Rep Rows 2 - 5 till you get the length you need for your cowl / scarf / wrap, ending with Last Pattern Row 5A

In the Last Pattern Row 5A, we work the same pattern (as Row 5), but we will not work the ch-12.  We will just lock the last ch-12, without starting a new one.  Got it?

Last Pattern Row 5A : Front of project : Locking in the ch-12 :
hdc in the 1st st ;
*(ch 1, sk next st, hdc in the next ch-sp) ;
rep (to) once ;
{keep the ch-12 sp against your work & work into the hdc with the ch-12
behind the hdc },
[ch 1, sk next st, hdc in the next st] ;
rep {to} , hdc in the next st * ;
rep *to* till end. Turn

Last Finishing Row : Back of project
sc in each st and ch-sp till end.
Ensure you have the same number of sts you started with
Fasten off and weave in ends.

If you are making a cowl, end with Last Pattern Row 5A, & use one of the joining methods given below to join the two ends of your cowl

I worked till I had about 48" in length.  I then joined the two ends to make a cowl.

Whipstitch to join : https://youtu.be/wZ-9LNzftMA

Invisible join : https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM

Single crochet to join : https://youtu.be/6FXoW_47_dI

If you are making a scarf, end with Last Finishing Row to match the starting end.
You could attach tassels to the end of your scarf.
Check out the two videos below for tassels
