67- BLANKET PROJECT FOR NELSON MANDELA

This project is being done to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of Nelson Mandela.
While working on the Guinness World record breaking event (for the largest blanket), we Indians were breaking a record set by South Africa 67-blankets group.  We heard about this event to honour Nelson Mandela and decided to join in too.  This is my meagre contribution to that awesome event.

This is the huge 4515 m2 portrait that is being planned.

Thank you for joining me.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

free crochet granny square blanket pattern

For this lovely project, we need to use the simple granny square pattern.

You can opt to start with chains or the magic circle start. Check the top of this blog for magic circle start information.

These two charts will help you along in creating your black blanket for the Nelson Mandela project. Come along and be a part of something beautiful!

This is how you'll start and keep working around till you reach 160 cm x 160 cm

..and this is the detail of the following rounds.

Start Round 1 : with a magic circle. Work 3 dc in the magic circle ;
(ch 2, 3 dc) in the same magic circle 2 more times ;
ch 2, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Pull lightly to close.

In case you find the magic circle difficult, here’s Option 1.
Start Round 1 Option 1 : with a ch 4, join with a sl-st to the 1st ch.
Work 3 dc in the ch-4 sp ;
(ch 2, 3 dc) in the same ch-4 sp 2 more times ;
ch 2, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

From this round on remember 2 things :
a)   That we sk all dc’s all the time and only work in the ch-sps,
b)   That we will work 3 dc in each ch-sp, and (3 dc ; ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner.  That’s basically all we need to do.  Easy enough, right?

Round 2 : sl-st into the 1st ch-sp , (3 dc ; ch 2, 3 dc) in that 1st corner ch-sp ;
*ch 1, rep (to) once in the next corner ch-sp* ;
rep *to* all around  ;
ch 1 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 3 : sl-st into the 1st ch-sp , 3 dc in the 1st ch-sp ;
(3 dc ; ch 2, 3 dc) in the next corner ch-sp ;
*ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-sp ;
ch 1, rep (to) once in the next corner ch-sp* ;
rep *to* all around  ;
ch 1 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

and that’s or pattern done!  You work in rounds, remember the 2 points mentioned above and keep going till you reach 160 cm x 160 cm.
As you’re working a square, once you reach 160 cm along one side, you’re done!

It is always lovely to *give back* to the less fortunate.. more than it is to receive.. so I do hope you join in this drive as well.

Once done, fold your project up, neatly bag it  and courier to Kochi , Kerala, India (This is for Indians ONLY.  For all others, please check your delivery point on the Facebook group page.  Thanks)
