Sweet Nothings Crochet: SKIPPY BLANKET

This is a very beautiful crochet pattern for a blanket and it works up very quickly. The beauty of this pattern is that it is totally reversible and because of it's construction it is very soft and warm. I have worked this pattern using local (Indian) 4-ply acrylic yarn with a 3.75 mm crochet hook and it feels like it is a creation made with 6-ply yarn.

Materials used : Today I’ve used some of our lovely Indian Oswal acrylic 4-ply yarn with a 3.75 mm crochet hook

Keep an embroidery needle ; sewing needle ; fabric glue to seal ends

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarn ; Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn , Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.

The beauty of this pattern is that it is totally reversible and very easy.

Work with at least 2 colors to get the full effect of the pattern. I used 4 colors : white, off white, sunshine yellow, and yellow ochre. I worked my border in off white

What have I done differently ?

1) This pattern starts with chain stitches, but I've started with fsc or foundation single crochet. I find this a neat start

2) The designer worked in trc and dc. I decided to work with dc and hdc stitches.

So here is what I did :

I started with fsc in multiples of 4 + 2

Start Row 1 : (with Color 1 ) : with fsc in multiples of 4 + 2 for the width of your blanket (So I worked 39" as I wanted a 1" border

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Row 2 : dc in the 1st 2 fsc ;

*ch 2, sk next 2 fsc, dc in the next 2 fsc* ;

rep *to* end. Turn.

I have cut my yarn every second row and woven the yarn in as I started the row, but you could always carry your yarn up and work that way.

At the end, we are working a border and it will all be neatly hidden.

OK, From now on, we will be working in the skipped stitches one row below wrapping the ch-2 in between. So we yarn over, and then work over the ch-2 and into the skipped st the row below, and then complete the dc.

Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.

Row 3 : (With Color 2) : hdc in the 1st 4 sts ;

*ch 2, sk next 2 sts, work dc in the next 2 skipped sts from the row below* ;

rep *to* the last 4 sts ;

hdc in the last 4 sts. Turn.

Row 4 : (With Color 2) : hdc in the 1st 2 sts ;

*ch 2, sk next 2 sts, work dc in the next 2 skipped sts from the row below* ;

rep *to* the last 2 sts ;

hdc in the last 2 sts. Turn.

Change color

Note : I have decided to work 4 colors, so I changed color 4 times. If you decide to work 2 or 3 (or more) colors, you just change colors every two rows

Rep Rows 3 and 4 for the length of your blanket.

I worked just a little before 39" and then worked the last row.

For our last row we need to cover all our ch-2 sps. So basically what you need to do is work 2 hdc over every 2-dc set and work 2 dc over the ch-2 sp as we have, working the dc in the row below.

I am not sure which row you will end up with but here's what you should do

Last Row : hdc in the 1st 2 sts ;

*work dc in the next 2 skipped sts from the row below ; hdc in the next 2 dc* ;

rep *to* the last 2 sts ;

hdc in the last 2 sts.

Fasten off.

Last Row : hdc in the 1st 4 sts ;

*work dc in the next 2 skipped sts from the row below ; hdc in the next 2 dc* ;

rep *to* the last 4 sts ;

hdc in the last 4 sts.

Fasten off.

FINISHING :

There are several ways to end this project.

First off though, we need to work a row/round of sc / hdc or dc all around.

So work one st (of your choice) in each st for the last row, and then work 3 sts in the corner st and continue down the side.

The sides do not have sts, so work 1 st in each horizontal bar of hdc and 2 sts in each horizontal bar of dc along the sides. Make a note of how many sts you work along one side so it makes it easier to map for the second side.

Remember to work 3 sts in the corner st for easy turning OR work hdc ; ch 1, hdc in the corner st (as I have done)

Round 2 : Once again work the st of your choice in each st all around, but in each corner st, you will work 3 sts in the centre st or work (hdc ; ch 1, hdc) in the ch-1 sp in each corner.

Work as many rounds as you want for your border. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Note : Remember to weave in your corner yarns before you start.

This is one simple finish.

2) The first row/round of sc/hdc or dc all around is a must.
You can then work the simple finish given above and then end with a row of picot sts.

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook). For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).

For this, I'd work a picot in every 3rd st. But if you so decide, please count the sts on the top and see if you have sts in multiples of 3 for even-ness.

If you have sts in multiples of 2, then work in every alternate st.

Say you have multiples of 3 along the sides and multiples of 2 along the top and bottom, work the picot accordingly.

3) Rather than fuss around with calculations, an easier finish would be the crab stitch or reverse single crochet st

You can work as many rounds of the simple finish first and in the last round, work this reverse single crochet stitch.

As you work around the corners, I'd work a crab stitch ; ch 1, crab stitch in the chain space for a neat flat finish.
