HALF HERRINGBONE HEADBAND

Two beautiful Half Herringbone Headbands - free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet

I've used this fantastic Half Herringbone crochet stitch for other articles of clothing and I thought I'd make this headband as well.
Find the cowl I've made using the same stitch here & here & here ; a beanie here & here ; a pair of gloves here and a handbag here ðŸ˜€.  Enjoy.

My patterns require a small amount of thinking and calculation - but that is just so that you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make it to any size you want. That's fun, right? Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Ferris wheel yarn used
Materials used : Today I’ve used about 50 gm of Lion Brand Ferris Wheel acrylic yarns with a 4.5 mm crochet hook fabric glue ; embroidery needle

For Indians : The yarn I've used is about as thick as our Vardhaman acrylic yarn.
You could use Anchor , Red ros or unbranded knitting cotton as well as Oswal acrylic yarns
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Semco Spotlight yarn or Marvel 8-ply yarn (Australia).
Other yarns could be Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.  However the thinner the yarn, more the yarn requirement and lighter or more delicate the end result.

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Abbreviations used : (Using U.S terminology)
lp(s) : Loop(s)                  sc : Single crochet

yo : Yarn Over

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

1) This pattern is worked in a round and either side can be up down. We work in rounds, joining at the end of every round.
2) The round will be the circumference you need for your project and you will then work in rounds till you get the length you need for your headwear
3) There is no stitch count for this pattern - just the circumference needed
4) You can make a headband ; beanie, cowl or gloves using this stitch. Check the top of this blog for links.

Foundation Half double crochet (fhdc) : This is a unique way of starting a project directly with a row of double crochet stitches.  Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/SEG2UCRfypA
What is a slip stitch : https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw
Start Row / Round 1: with fhdc for as many stitches as you need for the circumference of your headband.
Keeping your chain row flat, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Work Row 1 and then join to make a round
Note : How do I calculate the circumference needed?
Below see the chart (which is from the general head sizing chart link above).
See the size you want to make the headband, and work as many stitches needed.
So if its say a Small Adult, the circumference needed is 22". Now depending on the looseness/tension of your work and the stretch of your yarn, make the first fhdc row 22" and then join with a sl-st to make this your first round. Got it?
Head sizing chart to explain how to calculate sizes

Hhdc : Half herringbone stitch: In case the video does not, please go to https://youtu.be/pFifXoGVU3c

Round 2 : hhdc in the 1st st & in each st all around ;
join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Starting Round 2

Working in spirals
and that's it - our pattern done.
Rep Round 2 till you have the width needed for your headband.
Repeat Round 2 till finished length reached
I am sure you can already see the beautiful slightly diagonal and complicated-looking stitch peeping through (but shhh 😉 .. only we know it isn't all that hard).
Rep Round 2 till you have the length you need for your project.

Finishing Ideas :
Finishing ideas
There are several ways to end your lovely project
1) Continue the pattern all the way to the end - i.e. to the length you want for your project ;
2) Work 1 sc in each st all around to finish (which is what I did) ;
3) Work sc and then you could work a round of Crab stitch all around the brim of your project.
If you choose to do this or Option #2, then please go back to the first round (i.e. the other side of the headband) and work the same pattern that end as well.
