VOWEL of the HINDI ALPHABET
If
you have been following my blogs you’ll know that I have been working on the
Devnagari script and am slowly going through the vowels of the Hindi alphabet.
I am following this chart here for my Hindi Devnagari script.

Materials used : Today I’ve used local unbranded knitting cotton yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends ; stitch markers ; embroidery needle ; sewing needle ; Mod Podge to stiffen motif
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red rose ; 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns as well
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn , Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn

Insert
hk into st, yo and pull up a lp (2 lps on hk) ; insert hk into next sc, yo and

Instruction information
Please note that I start all rows with a ch 1 turning chain
for ease.
Please

Part 1 :
We
start with the straight line on the right hand side of our vowel.
Start Row 1 : with 12 fsc.
Turn.
Row 2 :
sc in all 12 sts. Turn.
Row 3 :
sc in all 12 sts ; ch 8. Turn.
Row 4 :
sc in the 2nd ch from hk, sc in the next 6 ch ;
sc
in the next 3 sts ; 5 fsc. Turn.
Rows 5 & 6 : sc in all 15 sts. Turn.
Fasten
off and weave in ends.
Weave
in ends.
Part 2 :
In
this part we will work on the left hand side “Shr” part.
To
get that tight “V” shape, we will work a sc 2-tog over 3 sts, skipping 1
st in between for all 3 rows.
Start Row 1 : with 20 ch ; sc in the 2nd ch from
hk and in the next 7 ch ;
sc 2-tog over the next 3 ch skipping the centre ch
st (so over the 9th and 11th st, skipping the 10th
st) ; sc in the last 8 ch.
Row 2 : sc in the 1st
7 sc ; sc 2-tog over the next 3 sts, skipping the centre sc ;
sc in next 4 sts
; sk the next st, 2 sc in the next st ; sc in the last st. Turn.
Row 3 :
sc in the 1st sc ; sk next st , 2 sc in the next st ; sc in the next
3 sts ;
sc 2-tog over the next 3 sts, skipping the centre sc ; sc in each st
till the end. Turn.
This
end is the lower part of your “Shr”.
Fasten
off and weave in ends.
To
attach :
We will attach the centre st of Part 2 to the 5th st on the bar of
Part 1.
So attach the two sts on either
side of the centre st plus the centre st of Part 2, to sts 5, 6 and 7 of Part
1.
When
blocking, curve the upper part of the “Shr” down
Part 3 :
In
this final part we will work on the right hand side “Shr” part.
Start Row 1 : with 3 fsc.
Turn.
Row 2 :
dc in the 1st st ; hdc in the next st ; sc in the last st. Turn.
Row 3 :
sc in the 1st st ; hdc in the next st ; dc in the last st. Turn.
Row 4 :
Rep Row 2.
Row 5 :
Rep Row 3 ; 9 fsc.
Turn
and sl-st into the sc at the bottom corner of Row 5.
What
does this mean?
Row 5 has a sc, hdc and dc and you have worked fsc from the dc
end.
So you loop that fsc chain back and
sl-st into the 1st st of Row 5, which is the sc.
Got it?
We
will now work the last curved bit for “Shr”.
For
this we will work along the side of the stitches (along the post) of Rows 5, 4
and 3.
After
you have attached, turn your work and you are now on the back of your work.
Row 6 :
sc in the 1st 3 sts. Turn.
Row 7 :
sk the 1st st , dc + hdc in the next st ; sc in the last st. Turn.
Row 8 :
sk the 1st st , sc + hdc in the next st ; dc in the last st. Turn.
Rows 9 - 14 : Rep Rows 7 – 8.
Fasten
off and weave in ends.
To
attach :
We attach Part 3 to the right side of the Part 1 bar on the 5th, 6th
and 7th sts.
Block
as needed per yarn instructions.
How did I stiffen my alphabets?
For all my alphabets (whether English or Devnagari), I use Mod Podge (1 MP : 2 water) - so if doing a large batch its table spoons with the proportion or tea spoon depending on quantity needed.
For Indians : Fevicol MR or Fevicryl Fabric glue in similar proportions works as well.
