PREEMIE BABY BOOTIES

Preemie Baby Booties - free crochet pattern info from Sweet Nothings Crochet

I was requested to make some preemie baby booties for a charity and here are a range of ideas for you to work on.

Preemie booties are a bit of work - they need to be soft and tiny as .. so not only do you need a soft yarn, you also need to have a soft hand with a light tension for your work and this is definitely a work of love.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Materials used : Today I’ve used ~ 20 gms of soft unbranded cotton yarn with a 3 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers
For Indians You can use VardhamanOswal acrylic or Laura knitting cotton.
You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns ; Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.  Using chunky yarn just means that the project zooms ahead that much faster.  So if you want a thicker yarn, just use a few strands together.
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.
but I think you could also use Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn
You may just have to tweak the gauge a bit.

and then I thought I would try this pattern again but with an fsc start
Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

and here's how you turn the fsc chain into a round
How to turn a foundation Single Crochet row into a round :

Pattern 1 - worked with fsc chain startthe fsc chain worked into the round

the base of the little booties for you to compare finish
I started with 6 fsc ; then worked 2 hdc in the 1st fsc ; hdc in the next 4 fsc ; 4 in the last fsc and turned around and worked from under the fsc chain. From then on it's the same pattern as on the video

PATTERN 2 :
Pattern 2 - two ways
I've used this pattern for today's second ultra cute ultra tiny creation. This is a simple pattern which does not have a video. However here are videos for all the stitches used.
Pattern 2
Oh there are two things I added to this pattern.
1) I added a round of hdc after Round 5 (hdc decrease round). I felt starting a post stitch around the decrease round would be too bulky and too rough for a preemie baby bootie.
2) I added a round of sc after the finish of 3 rounds of the ankle post stitches.
So in total I have two rounds more.
See if this makes a difference in your creation.
The original finish with 3 rows of post stitchesMy version: with a row of sc

Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;

{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.

This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.

Front post half double crochet : fphdc :  Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch of the row below. Here is an easy video tutorial for the fphdc at https://youtu.be/R_dVr9FnBkk

Back post half double crochet : bphdc :  Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch of the row below. Here is an easy video tutorial for the bphdc at https://youtu.be/9jJHgDX2MsE

And then I decided to work this pattern with a fsc chain start. I started with 9 fsc. I then worked the 1st hdc in the 1st fsc , hdc in the next 7 fsc, 6 hdc in the corner last fsc and then continued the pattern along the base of the fsc as per instructions.

and base of both the booties for you to compare

PATTERN 3 :
Pattern 3
I've used this pattern for today's third ultra cute ultra tiny creation.  This is a video link so yaay again
cute sole without a sc-blo defining line

I decided to try this with a fsc chain start and started with 6 fsc. You then go back to video and start with the 2 hdc in the 1st fsc, hdc in the next 4 fsc and so on.

PATTERN 4 :
Pattern 4 - two ways
I've used this pattern for today's fourth ultra cute ultra tiny creation.  This is a video link again

For this pattern I worked a hdc 2-tog in Round 5 (or as she says last round where we make this into a little slipper) round where she worked a skipped st followed by a hdc - for the second decrease round. This is the round before we start off on the cuff for our tiny little booties.
I preferred working the 2-tog st as it leaves less of a space, and feel that's better for preemie booties.
fsc start chainfirst round as given but around the fsc chain
fsc start chain and then 1st round as given but around fsc start chain
and this is how the bases look
Yet again I have reworked this pattern starting with the fsc chain start.
For this pattern, I started with 4 fsc and then worked the pattern as she has with 3 hdc in the 1st fsc ; hdc in the next 2 fsc and so on joining with a sl-st to the 1st hdc.
We are then back to the video as usual.  See if this makes a difference for you.
The bootie size stays the same  - and here are the photos of both completed booties.
