The Diamond Top has two patterns here.  I started working on one with a chart I found, and then chanced on this free pattern as well.  Choose what works for you.
Oh, and do read all the way to the end as there are ideas on how to make this a crop top as well.

Materials used : Today I’ve used about 500 gms of some soft Marvel 5-ply acrylic with a 4 mm crochet hook
Note : Amount of yarn needed for individual project(s) depends on size of yarn / hook, size you are making it for as well as the tension with which you work.  Amount given here is only for rough estimation for the size I’ve made it for.
For Indians : The yarn I’ve used is similar in thickness to our Laura knitting cotton.  Our lovely Indian Anchor knitting cotton , Red rose or White rose knitting cotton yarns are a good substitute.  I’d also suggest Alize cotton yarn
For Non-Indians : This yarn is similar in thickness to Lily Sugar n Cream cotton yarn. The other international yarns I’ve used of this thickness are Milford Satin knitting cotton, DMC Petra knitting cotton & Aunt Lydia Bamboo Viscose 10 knitting cottons.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

Size made :  (L/XL)
You can make this project to any size.  Size here given only for rough estimation of yarn.

Instructions : (Using U.S terminology)
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

As mentioned before, follow my pattern or this free pattern at https://www.nickishomemadecrafts.com/diamond-v-neck-top-crochet-pattern/

If the yarn or hook used in the free pattern does not work, come join me as I work on a slightly different pattern with a similar diamond patterned result.
I changed the pattern just a little bit (as I found the ch-2 sps too lacy for my top when using dc, so changed to sc) but if you can read charts, go ahead and work it as is.

We will work two rectangles / squares - one each for front and back, using the same pattern.  We then join sides and shoulders, leaving an armhole and a neckline opening to complete your lovely top
Chart for All Diamonds Top
The stitch count for today's pattern is in multiples of 12 + 4

We work one front and one back in the same pattern

and that's our pattern done.
Rep Rows 2 - 7 to get our pattern done.

Work the pattern all the way till the top, till you get the length you need for your top.
Once done, fasten off and weave in ends, leaving a tail for attachment.
Make two identical pieces for front and back.

Use one of the methods below to join the front and back.
Join the sides leaving an armhole opening.
Join the shoulders, leaving a neck opening.

You could work a row of sc or crab stitch around the armhole and neck ending if you like

Armhole shaping ideas

Now if you, like me, wish to have a shaped armhole, then you need to know how to decrease to shape armholes in general.

Once you reach the point where you shape for armholes, here is an idea of what I did.

Working in pattern, I slipped past the 1st 4 sts at the start of the row and then did not work the last 4 sts at the end of the same row.
Over the next 3 - 4 rows, I worked a hdc 2-tog over the 1st and last 2 sts in each row.

Half double crochet 2-tog : hdc 2-tog : [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp] (3 lps on hk) ; insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp (4 lps on hk) ; yo, draw through all 4 lps on hk.  One hdc 2-tog made.

Check the video tutorial at https://youtu.be/jdaXTr7Lcig

I then worked without decrease till I reached the neckline level.
Sometimes when working in pattern, you may need to work the hdc 2-tog over a st and a ch-sp.  Keep this in mind when remembering that your ch-sp then may be ch-1 or no chains at all.

Neckline shaping ideas
Neckline detail for All Diamonds Top
With the simpler rectangle pattern, you do not need to worry about shaping either armhole or neckline - but here's what I did
Mark the centre st (at neckline depth) and decide how wide you want your neckline. Place markers at both points.
You will then work from the armhole till that point (or 1st marker) in pattern and then back to the armhole.
Continue working till the neckline marker, reducing for shape using hdc 2-tog only on neck edge.
Keep notes on what you are doing on one side of neckline, so you can mirror it for the other side.

As mentioned before, work one round of sc or reverse single crochet/ crab stitch all around the neckline and armhole edgings for a neat finish if desired.

How to make this pattern into a crop top?
Easy.. All that changes for a crop top is the length - so if you keep the length just under the bust, then you get a crop top.
