VEGANETTE TOP

Veganette Top - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet
VEGANETTE TOP

The Veganette Top uses the simple granny square pattern, starting from the centre and fanning out to the sides.  This easy square creation can be adapted for any size, using any yarn with a suitable hook.

This pattern was chosen by my client and she wanted it as a summer crop top.  The combination of yarns makes for a cool creation.

With all my patterns, you need to think just a wee bit - but that also allows you to be creative and to use this to make my patterns to any size, using any yarn and a suitable hook.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Materials used : Today I’ve used about 200 g gms Katia Veganette (Autumn/Winter) knitting cotton with a 3.5 mm crochet hook
Note : Amount of yarn needed for individual project(s) depends on size of yarn / hook, size you are making it for as well as the tension with which you work.  Amount given here is only for rough estimation for the size I’ve made it for.

For Indians : The yarn I’ve used is similar in thickness to our Laura knitting cotton.  Our lovely Indian Anchor knitting cotton , Red rose or White rose knitting cotton yarns are a good substitute.  I’d also suggest Alize cotton yarn

For Non-Indians : This yarn is similar in thickness to Lily Sugar n Cream cotton yarn. The other international yarns I’ve used of this thickness are Milford Satin knitting cotton, DMC Petra knitting cotton & Aunt Lydia Bamboo Viscose 10 knitting cottons.

Size made : 34” (M/L)
You can make this project to any size.  Size here given only for rough estimation of yarn.

Difficulty level : Easy Skill level.

Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

Before we head off to the project, let’s get an idea of what we’re creating here today.

This is not my idea.  My client saw this top and I was lucky to find some assistance on this website.  The link below does not have written instructions - so here are my notes as I make my top

For this pattern we will make two granny squares that will make the front and back for your top.
The squares are then attached from the sides, leaving an armhole opening, and the shoulders, leaving a neck opening.
We get a lovely boat-neck and a small sleeve that gently hangs over the shoulders.

You need to decide (& measurements you need) before you start :
1) Length of top (front and back)
2) Round chest measurement
3) Depth (or dip) of neckline
4) Round armhole measurement

I will not indicate color changes as that will mar your creativity 😃

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and work 3 dc in it.
(ch 2, 3 dc in the same magic circle) ;
rep (to) 2 times ;
ch 2 & join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Detail of centre - Veganette top
Round 2 : 3 dc in the 1st corner ch-sp ;  ch 2, 3 dc in the same 1st ch-sp ;
(ch 1, 3 dc in the next corner ch-sp ;  ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-sp) ;
rep (to) 2 times ;
ch 1 & join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 3 : sl-st into the 1st ch-2 corner sp ;
3 dc in the 1st corner ch-sp ;  ch 2, 3 dc in the same 1st ch-sp ;
*ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp ;
(ch 1, 3 dc in the next corner ch-sp ;  ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-sp)* ;
rep *to* all around ;

Round 4 : 3 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;

[ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp] ;
rep [to] once* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 1 & join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

I'm sure you see how we are slowly growing our square pattern - the regular granny square pattern just being made extra large.  So I'll just take you through two more rounds to make sure you totally get the idea.

Round 5 : 3 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
[ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp] ;
*(ch 1, 3 dc in the next corner ch-sp ;  ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-sp)
rep [to] 3 times* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 1 & join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 6 : 3 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
[ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp] ;
*(ch 1, 3 dc in the next corner ch-sp ;  ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-sp)
rep [to] till the next corner ch-sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 1 & join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
See how the Veganette top slowly grows
So that's how we are growing the square pattern.
All you need to do is keep working the pattern till you have the waist or chest measurement (whichever is larger)
So continue Reps of Round 6 till you get to the size / measurement you need.

Let's put this into numbers :
For a 34" chest (and say 31" waist), you will choose to work till 34 - 35".
So each square needs to be half the chest measurement - which is 17 - 17.5" (depending on how snug the wearer wants it).
You will then work till you have a square that is about 17- 17.5" and then fasten off.

You will work two such squares.
Then use one of these methods to join the squares together.

Whipstitch to join :  https://youtu.be/wZ-9LNzftMA
Invisible join :  https://youtu.be/a6XZQ6VzJFM
Single crochet to join :  https://youtu.be/6FXoW_47_dI
Join-as-you-go joining method : https://youtu.be/zN3ECWTYXBk

What to join?
The two sides are joined, leaving an armhole opening
Then the shoulders are joined, leaving a neck opening.

You can leave it right here and have a lovely finished (cropped) top or you can do a small bit of finishing

PART 2 : FINISHING IDEAS
The shoulders will spill over onto the top of the arm just a bit (especially if you have made the top a bit loose but here are ideas to add in a small sleeve too
Sleeve creation for the Veganette top
Re-attach your yarn at the bottom of the armhole (joint that will come under the arm).
Work 3 dc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
(ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-3 sp) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 1 & join to the 1st st with a sl-st.

These instructions are repeated for as many rounds as you need to get a small sleeve.  I have worked 3 rounds.

IDEA 2 :
Work a finishing round around the armhole and neckline.
The Crab stitch or reverse single crochet is a neat stitch to give a pebbled finish to your work.
