DAISY CROP TOP

The ubiquitous granny square idea works with this cute Daisy Crop Top as well. We start with a granny square-like circle and magically turn it into a pentagon, which forms the focus of the top.

I have used two different cotton yarns - a printed for the motif and a plain for the rest of the top, but it will look as gorgeous in all printed or all plain as well.

With all my patterns, you need to think just a wee bit - but that also allows you to be creative and to use this to make my patterns to any size, using any yarn and a suitable hook.

Materials used : Today I’ve used under 1 ball (100 gms) of Vardhman Cotton Dreamz and under 1 ball of Laura printed knitting cotton with a 4.5 mm crochet hook

Note : Amount of yarn needed for individual project(s) depends on size of yarn / hook, size you are making it for as well as the tension with which you work. Amount given here is only for rough estimation for the size I’ve made it for.

For Indians : The Vardhman Dreamz is similar in thickness to our Laura knitting cotton. Our lovely Indian Anchor knitting cotton , Red rose or White rose knitting cotton yarns are a good substitute. I’d also suggest Alize cotton yarn

For Non-Indians : This yarn is similar in thickness to Lily Sugar n Cream cotton yarn. The other international yarns I’ve used of this thickness are Milford Satin knitting cotton, DMC Petra knitting cotton & Aunt Lydia Bamboo Viscose 10 knitting cottons.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

This pattern has two parts :

We work the yoke (or motif) first and then we work on the body of the crop top.

Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and work 8 sc in it.

Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 2 : 2 sc in the 1st sc & in each sc all around

Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times. One trc made.

Chainless start for Triple / Treble Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of trc.

Round 3 : trc in the 1st sc ;

ch 3, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

We will work an odd combination of sts all in the ch-sp to get a needed effect

Round 4 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ;

(sc + hdc + dc , ch 1, dc + hdc + sc all in the ch-3 sp) ;

*ch 5, rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp*

rep *to*all around

ch 5, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 5 : sl-st into the 1st ch-1 sp ;

(ch 3, sc all in the ch-1 sp) ;

rep (to) all around

ch 3, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 6 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ;

hdc in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;

(ch 1, hdc) in same 1st ch-3 sp ;

rep (to) 2 times in same 1st ch-3 sp ;

rep (to) 3 times in the next two ch-3 sps ;

rep (to) 4 times in the next ch-3 sp ;

{place marker for 1st top left hand side corner} ;

Great. Now that our markers are in place it's easier.

We will work a total of 22 dc from the 2nd to 3rd marker ; and 22 dc from the 3rd to 4th marker.

Re-attach yarn at the 3rd marker.

We will work side to side in rows from here on

Row 7 : dc in the 1st hdc ;

sk ch-1 sp, dc in the next hdc ;

(dc in the ch-1 sp ; dc in the next hdc) ;

rep (to) 9 times ;

2 dc ; ch 2, 2 dc all in the next ch-3 sp ;

[dc in the next hdc ; dc in the next ch-1 sp] ;

rep [to] 9 times ;

dc in the next hdc ;

sk ch-1 sp, dc in the next marked hdc ;

{You are now at the 4th corner marker}

Turn

Rows 8 - 14 : dc in the 1st dc and each dc till the ch-2 sp ;

(2 dc ; ch 2, 2 dc) all in the ch-2 sp ;

dc in the next dc and each dc till the end. Turn.

At this point you can decide to work this 2 ways :

1) You can continue working rep of Row 8 till the side of your garment is the right size for you - just as the length keeps increasing. this will give you a "V" shaped end result

2) You can flatten the edge - which means hat the length you have right now is the end length you will get. Assuming you want a flat edge, I'm carrying on with the pattern

We will now work from side to side leaving the 2 sts on either side of the ch-sp unworked. So that means the dc ; ch-sp and dc on either side are not worked

I suggest that you place a marker in that dc before the ch-sp to remind you thats the decrease end.

Row 15 : dc in the 1st dc and each dc till 3 sts before the marked dc ;

hdc in the next 2 sts ; sc in the last st ;

sl-st in the marked dc; Turn.

Row 16 : sl-st in the 1st 2 sts ;

sc in the next 2 sts ;

{Move marker to the 4th st - or last sc worked) ;

hdc in the next 2 sts ;

dc in each st till last dc ;

2 dc in the last dc. Turn.

Row 17 : dc in the 1st dc and each dc till 4 sts before the marked dc ;

hdc in the next 2 dc ; sc in the next 2 hdc ;

sl-st in the next st.Turn.

Row 18 : sl-st in the 1st 2 sc ;

sc in the next 2 hdc ;

hdc in the next 2 dc ;

dc in the next 2 dc ;

{Move marker to the 2nd dc - the one you just worked)

dc in each st till last dc ;

2 dc in the last dc. Turn.

Rows 19 -25 : dc in the 1st dc and each dc till 4 sts before the marked dc ;

hdc in the next 2 dc ; sc in the next 2 hdc ;

sl-st in the next st.Turn.

At the end of Row 25, fasten off we will work a long (13" - 15" chain) ;

then sl-st in each st ch st all the way back.

You have finished one side along with the back tie.

Re-attach your yarn at the other end and repeat pattern to complete the mirror image on the other side ;

When you finish the 2nd side, and work the 2nd side tie, you can work the finishing along the side and top.

Remember that we work 2 sc in each horizontal bar of dc all along the sides ; and you will work 1 sc in each st or ch-sp all along the top.

You can either work this simple finish and work the side chains for around the neck now ;

OR you can work the Side Border pattern and then work the side chains.

You decide.

As you reach the top corners (Marker 1 and the Marker 5) we will need to work chains to go around the neck.

Markers 1 & 5 have 4 hdc and 3 ch-1 sps. The centre ch-1 sp (after 2 hdc) is where I suggest you work your side chains from.

So stop at Marker 1 and work a long length of chain (again I suggest 13" - 15") and sl-st all the way back ; sl-st in Marker 1 again, and continue on to Marker 5.

Repeat chain making instructions at Marker 5 and continue back down the other side till the end (till the side tie you 1st made)

Side border :

An optional finish is working a small border along the two sides and one along the base.

You could work this as you finish the last bit of instructions and are at the side tie that you first made.

(ch 3 + 2 dc in the 1st st ; sk next 2 sts, sc in the next st) ;

rep (to) all the way till the top (where you had the Marker 5) ;

sc in each st along the top ;

rep (to) all the way till the end (where you have the 2nd side tie)

Bottom edge of top border :

Again an optional finish along the base.

First work one row of sc all along the end

You can either work the same pattern you have done for the sides

OR you can work a shell pattern

For the shell pattern you need to ensure you have a multiple of 5 sts from end to end.

[sc in the 1st st ; sk next st, 5 dc in the next st ; sk next st, sc in the next st] ;

rep [to] till end.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
