I have made a similar ripple crop top in strawberry and chocolate here but this one has a slight twist to it - and you'll love it.

Materials used : Today I’ve used about 150 gms Anchor knitting cotton 4-ply yarn (in 2 colors) with a 3.25 mm crochet hook

Note : Amount of yarn needed for individual project(s) depends on size of yarn / hook, size you are making it for as well as the tension with which you work. Amount given here is only for rough estimation for the size I’ve made it for.

For Indians : The yarn I’ve used is similar in thickness to our Laura knitting cotton. Our lovely Indian Anchor knitting cotton , Red rose or White rose knitting cotton yarns are a good substitute. I’d also suggest Alize cotton yarn

For Non-Indians : This yarn is similar in thickness to Lily Sugar n Cream cotton yarn. The other international yarns I’ve used of this thickness are Milford Satin knitting cotton, DMC Petra knitting cotton & Aunt Lydia Bamboo Viscose 10 knitting cottons.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

Size made : free size (as its backless - has just straps for adjustment)

lp(s) : Loop(s) sc : Single crochet

Instructions : (Using U.S terminology)

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

Before we head off to the project, let’s get an idea of what we’re creating here today.

You also need to decide (& measurements you need) before you start :

1) Length of top (front and back)

2) Round chest measurement

3) Depth (or dip) of neckline

4) Round armhole measurement (just so that we can ensure proper side coverage)

This pattern works best with at least 2 colors. You could go ahead and use 3 colors as well - but I have only worked with 2 colors. 😃

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Start Row 1 (Color 1) : with a magic circle and work 7 dc in it.

Turn. Do not join. Leave as a semicircle - do not pull too tight.

Notes : i) For your convenience, place a marker in the 4th dc (which is the centre of this 7-dc set)

ii) We will be moving this marker to the centre of the every row you work.

iii) Each row will have 5-dc a this point, and you will always move it to the 3rd dc which is the centre of the 5-dc set

Row 2 (Color 1) : 2 dc in the 1^st dc ;

dc in the next 2 dc

{5 dc in the next marked dc ; (move marker to the last or 3rd dc of this 5-dc set)} ;

dc in the next 2 dc ;

2 dc in the last dc. Turn

{5 dc in the next marked dc ; (move marker to the last or 3rd dc of this 5-dc set)} ;

We will be working along the horizontal bars of the dc all along the base of the top

Change to Color 2.

Row 3 (Color 2) : 2 dc in the 1^st dc & each dc till the marked dc ;

{5 dc in the next marked dc ; (move marker to the last or 3rd dc of this 5-dc set)} ;

dc in each dc till the last dc ;

2 dc in the last dc. Turn

Row 4 (Color 2) : Rep Row 3

Change to Color 1.

and in the next row we work a dc spike stitch

Row 5 (Color 1) : 2 sc in the 1^st dc ;

*Dc Spike st in the next st ;

sc in the next st*;

rep *to* till 1 st before the marked st ;

sk the next st ,

{5 sc in the next marked st ; (move marker to the last or 3rd dc of this 5-sc set)} ;

sk the next st ; sc in the next st ;

rep *to* till the last st ;

2 sc in the last dc. Turn

Change to Color 2

Row 6 (Color 1) : 2 dc in the 1^st sc & each sc till the marked sc ;

{5 dc in the next marked sc ; (move marker to the last or 3rd dc of this 5-dc set)} ;

dc in each sc till the last sc ;

2 dc in the last sc. Turn

Row 7 (Color 2) : Rep Row 6

Row 8 (Color 2) : Rep Row 6

Change to Color 1.

and that's our pattern done !

Rep Rows 5 - 8 till you have almost reached the neckline and got as much as you need for the side of your crop top.

As you work the rows, you will be 'growing' it along the base and sides slowly grow too - but the height (or length) of the top grows faster due to the arrow-shape.

So once you have the width of the side (under armhole till the length you want), also ensuring that you are not over reaching at the neckline, you rep Row 3.

FINISHING

Two ways to make the bottom row and straps for the back

IDEA 1 :

As you finish making the last row with the straps that go around the neck, you are at the bottom corner st.

Work 2 dc in each horizontal bar all along the base of the top till the corner st ;

Work a chain length suitable to be tied behind the back to secure the base of the top ;

sl-st in each ch till the corner st ;

Work a 2nd chain length suitable to be tied behind the back to secure the base of the top ; Turn

sl-st in each ch till the corner st.

You have a finished base with two straps. You can work one row of sc till the next corner if you so desire - OR you can fasten off and weave in ends.

IDEA 2 :

As you finish making the last row, fasten off at the corner.

We will then make the tie at the bottom in a slightly different way, starting with one end of the tie, attaching it to the base of the tp, working along the base of he top and finishing with the 2nd side of he tie. - all in one continuous step.

Start with a long chain of a length suitable to be tied behind the back to secure the base of the top ;

2 dc in each horizontal bar all along the base of the top till the corner st ;

dc in the corner st ;

Add a second long chain of the same length as the first ; Turn ;

sl-st in each ch till the 1st dc ;

dc in each dc till end ;

sl-st in each ch till the end.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

And that's it ! Voila ! one cute triangle-shaped crop top ready to go!
