K for KITE GRANNY SQUARE

K for Kite Granny Square - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet
Today we continue working on a blanket with all alphabets -  & its K for Kite - the alphabets we all grew up with.   Remember to scroll till the bottom of this blog for the earlier alphabets.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Check out all my social media handles at the bottom of this blog

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.

All my blogs can be printed.  Find the printer friendly (green) link on the right hand side and at the bottom of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.

Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.

Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

To purchase this or similar yarn online, click here to buy your yarns online via Amazon.  While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used local Oswal 4-ply acrylic with a 4 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
General yarn info : I’d say you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this lovely project.

For our Kite Granny Square, we work a simple granny square first and then make a cute little kite motif.  We then use an embroidery needle to sew the two together.

Start Round 1 (with background color) : with a magic circle and work 12 dc in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12 dc)

Round 2 :  dc in the 1st dc & in each dc all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (24 sts)

Round 3 : dc in the 1st dc ; dc in the next dc ;
(dc in the next dc ; 2 dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) all around ;
dc in the last dc
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (36 sts)

(I've used white for my background color)
Round 4 :  3 dc in the 1st st ;
(hdc in the next st ; sc in the next 6 sts ; hdc in the next st ; 3 dc in the next st) ;
rep (to) all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st

For your convenience, you could place a marker in the centre corner st (which is the 2nd dc of the 3-dc set in each corner)

Round 5 : dc in the 1st st & each st till the corner marked st ;
3 dc in the corner marked st ;
(dc in each st till the corner marked st ;
3 dc in the corner marked st) ;
rep (to) 2 more times ;
dc in each dc till end ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st
Move markers

Rounds 6 & 7 : Rep Round 6
Fasten off and weave in ends.
KITE MOTIF
Choose two colors for your square and let's start.  You could either carry your unused color or use two balls of the same color and keep the lines separate.

How to change colors seamlessly : https://youtu.be/fRzSBja9jno

How to carry your yarn when using two colors : https://youtu.be/NuascBU3pxQ
Start Row 1 : (Using Color 1) : with a magic circle and work 3 dc in it. Pull to close but do not join - leave as a semi circle.  Turn.
Row 2 : 2 dc in the 1st dc ; dc in the next dc ; 2 dc in the last dc.  Turn.
Row 3 : 2 dc in the 1st dc ; dc in the next 3 dc ; 2 dc in the last dc.  Turn.
Row 4 : 2 dc in the 1st dc ; dc in the next 5 dc ; 2 dc in the last dc.  Turn.
Change to Color 2

Double crochet 2-tog : dc 2-tog :  [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 2 times (3 lps on hk) ;

{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 2 times.  One dc 2-tog made.

This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.
Row 5 : (Using Color 2) : dc 2-tog over the 1st 2 dc ; dc in the next 5 dc ; dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc.  Turn.
Row 5 : (Using Color 2) : dc 2-tog over the 1st 2 dc ; dc in the next 3 dc ; dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc.  Turn.
Row 7 : (Using Color 2) : dc 2-tog over the 1st 2 dc ; dc in the next dc ; dc 2-tog over the last 2 dc.  Turn.
Double crochet 3-tog : dc 3-tog :   https://youtu.be/qlnqXDB3OUM
Row 8 : (Using Color 2) : dc 3-tog over all 3 dc.  Fasten off and keep a long tail for attachment.
Now using an embroidery needle, attach the kite to the granny square. Use the photo as guide.
Remember to fasten off and weave in ends at the end of each square for ease in finishing.
May I also suggest that you block your squares before joining (as per yarn instructions).

Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
