TWO LOVELY COWLS
These are two of my Harry Potter
inspired cowls.. well, they’re Potter inspired mainly by the colours.. and I
guess these colours could also be that of some (football) team too, but they’re
made for Potter fans, so , here goes.

Materials used : Today I’ve used our Indian Vardhman Millenium acrylic yarn,
with a 4.5 mm crochet hook

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red rose ; Red rose metallic or unbranded knitting cotton as well as Oswal or Vardhaman acrylic yarns

International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
I saw both these patterns on a Pinterest page.
The first diagonal one I’ve made is a fully written pattern but I have made two small notes to assist the beginner.

The second one is from a chart I’d found, and I thought it was just too lovely to miss.
DIAGONAL SCARF / COWL
This is a lovely pattern and a neat simple two
line repeat, that does not really require any further explanation.

I used Gryffindor colours for this cowl.
I thought however, for the beginner, who can
easily attempt this pattern, that I’d add a small tip.
So first off, you can work this with any odd number
of stitches (though the pattern says 27 plus 4 chain)
As usual, I prefer to start with my foundation
single crochet stitch.

So we’re increasing only one side, (which
is what gives us this diagonal pattern)and we should ensure that we keep the
same number of stitches in each row – so if we start with 32 stitches, we will
have 16 sc and 15 ch-1 sps, and we should ensure that each row has this
count.
So to ensure that we do not make an error in
this increase, I’d suggest you place a marker on the side you’re increasing
on.. so you know which side to add that one sc in the first ch-1 sp.
The second thing I’d like to add is that this
lovely pattern can be left as a scarf, or you can just easily join the edges
and get a lovely infinity cowl as the diagonals neatly line up and if you work
the colours neatly, then you will be unable to see where you’ve joined up..
especially if you’ve started with the fsc.
Easy enough.. enjoy.
For the Second Cowl, I’ve used a chart I found
on Pinterest, using the Slytherin colours
Start with fsc in multiples of 8, for the length you want for your
scarf / cowl.
We start right off with our dc
2-tog in the following row.

Rep Rows 2 - 5 till you have a scarf / cowl of the length needed , ending with a Row 4.
If making a cowl, (as I have), then all I did was join the two ends of my scarf.
If leaving as a scarf, then using the two colours, add tassels at each end alternatively thus accentuating the colours and adding a little to the length and beauty of your scarf.
Now for cowl, you just join without any worries.
If making a cowl, I'd suggest you do a row sc each st and in each ch all the way to the end . Ensure that you have the same number of stitches at this end that you started with (i.e the first row of fsc)
