N for NEST GRANNY SQUARE

 The adorable N for Nest Granny Square - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crohet

Today we continue working on a blanket with all alphabets -  & its N for Nest - the alphabets we all grew up with.   Remember to scroll till the bottom of this blog for the earlier alphabets.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.

All my blogs can be printed.  Find the printer friendly (green) link on the right hand side and at the bottom of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.

Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.

Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

To purchase this or similar yarn online, click here to buy your yarns online via Amazon.  While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used local Oswal 4-ply acrylic with a 4 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
General yarn info : I’d say you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this lovely project.

How to change colors seamlessly : https://youtu.be/fRzSBja9jno

How to carry your yarn when using two colors : https://youtu.be/NuascBU3pxQ

For today's pattern we will work partly with brown yarn and partly with your background color yarn. You can either carry the yarn along or fasten off and re-attach at the end of the round. Do what suits you best.
Start Round 1 : (with brown color) with a magic circle and work 6 dc in that circle.
(Change to background color) ; 6 dc in that same circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12 dc)

Now we will work Rounds 2 & 3 with brown color along all the brown stitches, and then change to background color and work background color along all those set of sts.
Round 2 :  (with brown color) : dc in the 1st dc & in the 1st 12 dc ;
(change color to background) ; dc in the each dc till end ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (24 sts)

Round 3 : (with brown color) : dc in the 1st dc ; dc in the next dc ;
[dc in the next dc ; 2 dc in the next dc] ;
rep [to] 4 times ;
(change color to background ; fasten off brown color) ;
rep [to] till end ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (36 sts)

(Continue only with background color)
Round 4 :  sc in the 1st 3 st ; hdc in the next st ;
3 dc in the next st ;
(hdc in the next st ; sc in the next 6 sts ; hdc in the next st ; 3 dc in the next st) ;
rep (to) all around  till the last 3 sts ;
sc in the last 3 sts ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st

For your convenience, you could place a marker in the centre corner st (which is the 2nd dc of the 3-dc set in each corner)

Round 5 : dc in the 1st st & each st till the corner marked st ;
3 dc in the corner marked st ;
(dc in each st till the corner marked st ;
3 dc in the corner marked st) ;
rep (to) 2 more times ;
dc in each dc till end ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st
Move markers

Rounds 6 & 7 : Rep Round 6
Fasten off and weave in ends.

NEST PATTERN :
Start Row 1 : with a magic circle and work 6 dc in it.
Pull lightly to close but do not join.  Leave as a semicircle.  Turn.
Row 2 : 2 dc in each dc till end. Turn.
Row 3 : dc in the 1st dc  ; 2 dc in the next dc ;
(dc in the next dc ; 2 dc in the next dc ) ; rep (to) till end.
Crab Stitch or Reverse Single Crochet stitch : https://youtu.be/cG3crwyHPnk
Let's work one row of reverse single crochet / crab stitch over the top of the nest. The top is the flat part.  You could work it all around if you desire, but remember to work 2 sts in each corner for ease of turning and neatness.
Row 4 : Reverse sc or crab stitch in the 1st dc & each dc till end.  Fasten off and leave a tail for attachment
EGGS IN NEST :
You can either use an embroidery needle and white yarn and embroider in a few eggs in the nest, directly onto the main granny square (the brown part) OR you can crochet a small egg as follows :
Start with 3 fsc ; sc in the 1st fsc ; hdc in the next fsc ; 3 hdc in the corner fsc ; (Turn and working along the bottom of the fsc chain) ; hdc in the next fsc ;  sl-st to join to the 1st sc.  Fasten off and leave a tail for attachment
Make as many eggs as you'd like.
Then using an embroidery needle, place the eggs inside the nest - (i.e. the brown part of the granny square) ; then add in the nest on top of it.
Remember to fasten off and weave in ends at the end of each square for ease in finishing.
May I also suggest that you block your squares before joining (as per yarn instructions).

Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
