A SIMPLE LONG DANGLING EAR RING
( #Blogaday 21/365 )

Just yesterday I shared a squiggly wiggly spiral ear ring pattern, and as I was writing that up, another idea came to me .. yes you can see the ‘light’ come in in my eyes, can’t you?

Thank you for joining me.

Using a similar idea and similar yarn, here’s another tweak to that pattern and with this one blog, you're getting three pattern ideas as well.. so come along and let's work on something lovely together.

Materials used : Today I’ve used our Indian polyester silk thread, with a 1.75 mm crochet hook ; ready-made ear ring hoops (one pair minimum) ; beads, if needed ; ring ; glue to seal ends.

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros or unbranded knitting cotton as well
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Sweet Nothings Crochet

For this project, I worked on the pattern similar to the one posted yesterday, and then tweaked it a tad.

As before, you will attach your start thread into the loop of the ear ring (bottom ring bit). May I suggest that you add a small ring into the bottom loop, in case you are unable to work your yarn through the existing loop at the base.

So basically, we’re working a long chain and then we’re going to work a border along one side.. and that’s it.

That said, here are different ways and ideas on how to do this simple ear ring… which I guarantee you can make in half an hour!

Both patterns below give you the same end result, but the start is different.

Pattern # 1 :
Skill level : Easy

Please read to the end of this blog to see a tweak.

So as before, we will start with a long chain, and the number of stitches do not matter.  Just work it for as long as you want it.
As you’re working a chain, you will, as before, skip the 1st ch and work your 1st set of sts in the 2nd ch from hk, and then work in each ch all the way down to the end.

Now the idea of this ear ring is not necessarily to spiral, but just to be long and dangly – SO I have NOT added any extra stitches, and I’ve worked just one st in each st all the way down.

When you reach the end, attach your Contrast Color (CC) yarn. You will then work one sc in each st all the way back down till the end and fasten off at the last st.
(Read Starting & finishing tweak)

The most important thing is to ensure that you fasten off, weave and glue in the ends neatly.

Pattern # 2 :
Skill level : Easy

So as before, we will start with a long chain, and the number of stitches do not matter.  Just work it for as long as you want it.
As you’re working a chain, you will, as before, skip the 1st ch and work your 1st set of sts in the 2nd ch from hk, and then work in each ch all the way down to the end.
Once again the idea of this ear ring is not necessarily to spiral, but just to be long and dangly – so no extra stitches in each ch till end.
However,  what you could do is when you reach the end (i.e ear ring loop), you could turn around and work a sl-st all the way back down in the same colour.
Once you reach the other end, (and especially if you are leaving a tassel, then cut the yarn to the tassel length.  Check Starting & Finishing tweak for tassel idea)

You could then attach your CC yarn and work one row of sl-st all the way to the top and back down again, yet again leaving a long tassel at the start and end of your CC as well.

Once again, the most important thing is to ensure that you fasten off, weave and glue in the ends neatly.

Pattern # 3 :
Skill level : Easy - Intermediate

In this final idea, the only difference is to start with a foundation chain row.  This is what I’ve done.  I started my chain length with a fdc chain, or a Foundation Double Crochet and I left a long tassel length before starting.  When I reached the loop at the ear ring end, I attached my CC yarn and worked one sc in each fdc all the way back down to the tasseled end.  I once again ensured that I’d left a tassel at this end too.

Of course, if you wish to have more tassels, then you just add some more on in that last stitch.

Starting & finishing tweak :

I have decided to have a tasseled finish at the end of my dangly ear ring.  So for this, instead of attaching the tassels at the end, I have first measured out the length I want for my tassel, and then started out my 1st ch / fsc after that.  You can do this for both the ch and the fsc start.

Finally remember, that all ends must be woven in and glued down.  You can then slip on your ear rings, and give your head a cocky shake to show them off J
