Sweet Nothings Crochet: May 2024

Everyone travels and a baggage tag is not just an easy thing to identify your luggage but this is also a very cute gift, don't you agree !

I've made this paw as a bookmark here and today I'm tweaking my own pattern to make it a baggage tag. Thank you for joining me.

Materials used : Today I’ve used (Indian) polyester purse yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook ; key ring

For Indians : You could use Red ros e or unbranded knitting cotton too

If you need beads etc check here or here or here

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Difficulty level : Intermediate

lp(s) : Loop(s) sc : Single crochet

dc : Double crochet sp : Space

sl-st : Slip stitch ch : Chain

st(s) : Stitch(es) hk : Hook

Please note that I start all rows with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.

Today I've tweaked the pattern a little bit just to get it a bit smaller.

The paw bookmark was too large for a baggage tag - but if you are using a thinner yarn & hook (than I am with a 4mm crochet hook), then please go to the link above now. If not, come along and check out my tweak.

Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.

The CC (Contrast color) is whatever color you want for the pads of the feet (black/brown) and the MC (Main color) is for the paw (so white or pink maybe?)

PART 1 : BASE OF PAW

Start Round 1: (with darker CC) :

with a magic circle and 12 hdc in that circle.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st hdc. (12 sts)

Round 2 : (with CC) :

2 dc in the 1^st hdc and in each hdc all around.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st hdc. (24 sts)

Round 3 : (with lighter MC) :

2 dc in the 1^st hdc ;

*hdc in the next hdc ; 2 hdc in the next hdc* ;

rep*to* all around.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st hdc. (36 sts)

In the following row, we’re going to work on the three little paws.

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.

Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times. One trc made.

Before we start Round 4, a quick note.

We will work the three little toes here, and then we need to stop and count the stitches between the 1st and last toe.

Mark the stitch in the centre (of the remaining unstitched stitches) and stop at that marked point.
We will work a long tail (that will be the tie for your luggage handle) at that point and then continue working sts to finish the round.

Round 4 : (with MC) :

sc in the 1^st st ;

(hdc, dc, trc in the next st ;

3 trc in the next st ; trc, dc, hdc all in the next st ;

sc in the next st) ;

[sc in the next st ; rep (to) once] ;

rep [to] once ;

{1 : Stop and count stitches and place marker at centre back of paw}

sc till marked st ;

<2 :Work a long chain at this point - I worked 75 ch - and then loop back and join with a sl-st to the same st you started from > ;

sc in the next st of the main paw, and sc all the way to the end ;

and join with a sl-st in the next st.

Fasten off and weave in yarn.

1 : Stop and count stitches and place marker at centre back of paw

2 :Work a long chain at this point - I worked 75 ch - and then loop back and join with a sl-st to the same st you started from

PART 2 : PAW PAD (Make 3)

Round 1 : (with darker CC and 3mm hk) :

Make a magic circle and work 10 hdc in that circle.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

Fasten off and leave a tail to attach to the paw base.

Using an embroidery needle, attach the three little pads onto the toe bits.

Here's another idea. The pads are sticking out a bit - so if you want the centre portion to similarly 'stick out', go ahead and make another small round working Rounds 1 & 2 (of Part 1 - Base of paw) and leave a long tail to attach. Then attach that onto the base darker portion and all pads will be 3D !

and this is 'padded' (but without poly-fill) with Rep of Rounds 1-2.

It doesn't show on photo but it does make a difference

To make it even cuter, fill in a small bit of poly-fill before you attach the three little pads and the centre pad and it will puff our more.
