16-POINT STAR DOILY

16-POINT STAR DOILY - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet
Today come and join me as we make this beautiful crochet 16-point Star Doily. I've used an Indian cotton thread with a 1.5 mm crochet hook but this pattern can be used in several ways - your imagination is the key!

In this pattern I've gone a little beyond the original chart and have created a slightly larger doily - like I said just imagine it and then do it and be amazed!

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Chart for 16-POINT STAR DOILY
Before we set off on our doily journey, a quick idea. You can add beads in the last round if you wish and if you do want to do it, go ahead and add 16 beads (as we have 16 apices or ends to our pattern, the centres of the chevrons)
I've not done this, as my client did not want beads - but gosh that would look so lovely

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

(ch 3, sk next dc, sc in the next dc) ;

rep (to) all around ;

ch 1 + dc, sk next dc, and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Note : Working ch 1 + dc means you are in the centre of the last ch-3 sp.

If you are not happy with this work ch 3 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st. Then work sl-st and go to the centre of the 1st ch-3 sp and start Round 4.

In the following round we will work a Split dc 2-tog. This means that the first leg of the dc 2-tog is in one ch-3 sp and the 2nd leg of the same dc 2-tog is in the next ch-3 sp.

This video tutorial at https://youtu.be/1_oPlUfN5eg shows you how to use the dc 2-tog to decrease.

Note : Working ch 3 + dc means you are in the centre of the last ch-5 sp.

If you are not happy with this work ch 5 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st. Then work sl-st and go to the centre of the 1st ch-5 sp and start Round 5.

For the next round, we need to start in the ch-2 sp, which is behind us. So for this, I turned my work around and sl-st into the ch-2 sp, and then turned around again to start working the right way.

Whatever way you decide, we start in a ch-2 sp.

16-POINT STAR DOILY all done

and that's our beautiful doily done.

Now here's a tweak. I really like how this is opening out and if you want to work a few more rounds in the chevron (as I am going to) here's what I'd do

In the photo above, I've already worked the Optional Rounds below

Optional Rounds :  sl-st past the 1st st ;

dc 2-tog over the next 2 dc ;

*dc in the dc till the ch-5 sp ;

(3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) all in the next ch-5 sp ;

dc in the dc till you have only 3 dc left ;

dc 2-tog over the next 2 dc ;

sk next 2 sts, dc 2-tog over the next 2 dc*

rep *to* all around and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Rep this optional round as many times as you want to grow your doily.

Do let me know how this works out especially if you have added beads at the ends.
