A client gave me this delicately crafted flower with bud that her grand mother made for her aeons back - she uses it as neckwear especially on Anzac day - Lest we forget. It has become a bit worn with wear and she wondered if I could duplicate it.
This is the yarn she gave me - so it looks more like a carnation than a poppy but what the client wants, the client gets 🤷🏽♀️
Here are my notes as I delicately pull apart this creation to make a new one
(No, no, I did not tear it apart - but pull apart to view as in flatten and figure)
And how do you wear this? well, the beautiful little flower sits on one side of your neck and just at its base I'd loop the long necklace in such a way that the bud hangs down across the front of your shoulder.
Do you have any other ideas for wear? Do let me know.
Meanwhile, let's get on with this creative creation.

Materials used : Today I’ve used about 45 gms Anchor pearl cotton for the flower and about 45 gms for the sepal and tie (green) with a 1.25 mm crochet hook
Single Crochet : Sc :yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.One sc made.Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M
*[(ch 3, dc in the next ch-2 sp) ; rep (to) once more] ;
ch 3, dc in the next st* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st.
In our final round, there are two ways we can achieve the slight peaked effect.
We can work a ch-1 picot.
The video below shows ch-3 and ch-5. So in case you can't work a ch-1, please go ahead and make a ch-3 picot. With this fine thread it's not going to make that much of a difference. I'm just being fussy as I'm trying to copy the original as closely as I can
OR we can work a ch-2 sp between stitches (which is what I eventually did)
See what works for you.
How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook). For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
[(2 sc ; ch 2, 2 sc all in the next ch-3 sp) ; sc in the next st] ;
rep [to] all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
OPTIONAL Round 5 : sc in the 1st st ;
[(sc, sc + picot , sc all in the next ch-3 sp) ; sc in the next st] ;
rep [to] all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
One frilly flower complete
Let's carry on with that little green sepal (that holds the flower) which will then continue on to make the long tie
PART 2 : SEPAL & TIE
Round 1 : Attach green yarn to any stitch along Round 2 of the flower and work sc in 20 sts all around.
Note : I'd suggest that you work in spirals without joining at the last st, but this is up to you. This means you'll need to use a stitch marker to mark the last st.
Rounds 2 - 8 : sc in each st all around.
Attach yarn and work 20 sc all around & then work in spirals without joining
Stuff the sepal with a little bit of poly-fill and then work the next few rounds of decrease. If needed, add a little more poly-fill to keep the sepal tight and full
Single crochet 2-together : sc 2-tog :
Insert hk into st, yo and pull up a lp (2 lps on hk) ; insert hk into next sc, yo and pull up a lp (3 lps on hk); yo and draw through all 3 lps. One sc 2-tog complete.
(sc 2-tog over the next 2 sts ; sc in the next 3 sts) ;
rep (to) all around till marker (16 sts)
Round 10 :Decrease round : sc in the 1st st ;
(sc 2-tog over the next 2 sts ; sc in the next 2 sts) ;
rep (to) all around till marker (12 sts)
Round 11 :Decrease round :
sc 2-tog over the 1st 2 sts ;
(sc 2-tog over the next 2 sts) ;
rep (to) all around till marker (6 sts)
Now we will work a long cord (that goes around the neck - so you will work this for as long as you want it) over these 6 sts.
I found that it was hard to get to the tiny stitches so I stuck a toothpick into the tiny opening (and lodged it in the poly-fill) and found this worked for me. See if this works for you. If something else works, do let me know
Once you've got the length needed for the neck piece, we need to work on the little bud at the other end - so basically we reverse decrease instructions and increase similarly.
For convenience I'm going to start numbering all over again
3) PART 3 : BUD
Once again, I found it convenient to keep that tooth pick in place till I had a few stitches around.
Round 1 :Increase round :2 sc in each sc all around till marker (12 sts)
Round 2 :Increase round : sc in the 1st st ;
(2 sc in the next st ; sc in the next 2 sts) ;
rep (to) all around till marker (16 sts)
Round 3 :Increase round : sc in the 1st st ;
(2 sc in the next st ; sc in the next 3 sts) ;
rep (to) all around till marker (20 sts)
Rounds 4 - 15 : sc in each sc all around till marker (20 sts)
Re-attach the pink/red yarn (or whatever color you've used for the flower) and we'll create a sepal along the green portion of the bud.
Round 16 : (Using flower petal color) : sc in each sc all around till marker (20 sts)
The only difference in our spike stitch today and this video is that we are just pulling our yarn a lot longer than what we do for a dc or trc. I have pulled my yarn about 5 - 6 rows below the row I'm working. This is just to make the sepals (of our bud) show through).
Round 17 :Sepal Round
sc in the 1st 5 sts ;
(yarn over and pass your hook into a st 4 - 5 rows below and then pull it lightly back up again to the working row, sl-st in the same st) ;
*sc in the next 5 sts ; rep (to) in the same last st* ;
rep *to* all around till marker
Once again let's work some decrease rounds
Round 18 :Decrease round : sc in the 1st st ;
(sc 2-tog over the next 2 sts ; sc in the next 3 sts) ;
rep (to) all around till marker (16 sts)
Round 19 :Decrease round : sc in the 1st st ;
(sc 2-tog over the next 2 sts ; sc in the next 2 sts) ;
rep (to) all around till marker (12 sts)
Now start filling the bud with a little poly-fill. Remember to add a little more just before we close the bud as well.
Round 20 :Decrease round :
sc 2-tog over the 1st 2 sts ;
(sc 2-tog over the next 2 sts) ;
rep (to) all around till marker (6 sts)
Now fasten off and leave a long tail... and this is what it looks like.
Now using a needle and that tail of yarn, close that little opening. Just weave in the thread in and out of that last row neatly till you have it closed.
Then push the needle in through the top of the bud and pull out of the bottom (sepal part) and cut the thread off. This will ensure that the thread stays locked in and will not unravel. (Well, this is what I've done, but basically you have to secure that last tail of yarn neatly - choose whatever method suits you)
and your beautiful poppy flower neckwear with a cute little bud is all ready to wear
