STAR DOILY

Star Doily - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet
  STAR DOILY

Thank you for joining me as I make this gorgeous Star Doily - 16 beautiful spokes that shine out as I use this sparkly metallic cotton yarn.  Sadly, as many of you know, creativity is one thing and taking a photograph of the beautiful creation is a totally different thing - so you are probably unable to see the sparkliness of this wonderful doily.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh in this pattern, you could add a bead in the last round.  Scroll down to the last round instructions to see if you want to do that. In case you do, then go ahead and add 16 beads onto your yarn right now (of multiples of 16 if you want more than one bead at each point)

Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and work 16 sc in it. Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Note : As my yarn is super fine, I've started with 16 hdc

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0
Round 2 : dc in the 1st st ;
(ch 3, dc in the next st) ;
rep (to) all around ;
dc and join to the 1st st with a sl-st.
Note : In ending with the dc + sl-st we are in the middle of that last ch-3 sp.
In case you find this confusing, please end with ch 3 and join with sl-st to finish. Then to start the next round, please sl-st till the centre of the 1st ch-3 sp.

Round 3 : sc in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
(ch 5, sc in the next ch-3 sp) ;
rep (to) all around ;
ch 2 + dc and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
Note : In ending with the ch 2 + dc + sl-st we are in the middle of that last ch-3 sp.
In case you find this confusing, please end with ch 5 and join with sl-st to finish.

Round 4 : (3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) all in the 1st ch-5 sp ;
*sc in the next ch-5 sp ; rep (to) in the next ch-5 sp* ;

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook).  For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).

Here’s a great video https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

We will work a ch-3 picot in the middle of the ch sp.  So work ch 6 to start, then work in picot in the 3rd st from hook and work another ch-3 before working the dc's.  Got it?

(3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) all in the next ch-3 sp ;
dc in the next 5 dc* ;

Round 11 : sl-st past the 1st 2 dc ; dc in the next 6 dc ;
(3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) all in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
dc in the next 6 dc ;
*ch 13, sk next 2 dc, dc in the next 6 dc ;
(3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) all in the next ch-3 sp ;
dc in the next 6 dc* ;
rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st

In the following round, we will work sc all around - in each st and in all ch-sp
Round 12 : sc in the 1st 9 dc ;
(3 sc in the next ch-3 sp ; sc in the next 9 dc ;
13 sc in the next ch-14 sp ; sc in the next 9 dc)* ;
rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st

In the following round, we will work in the centre st of the ch-13 sp (so you can go ahead and mark the 7th st there) and the centre st of the ch-3 sp between the 9-dc sets (so go ahead and mark that st too).
This is simpler than counting sts each time - but do whatever suits you.

Round 13 : sl-st past the 1st 10 sc ;
(3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc all in the next sc) ;
*ch 11, sk next 16 sts, rep (to) in the next st* ;
rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st

Round 14 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ;
(3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) all in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
*ch 3, 9 sc in the next ch-11 sp ;
ch 3, rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st

Round 15 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ;

rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st

Round 16 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ;
(3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) all in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;

ch 7, rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st

Round 17 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ;
(3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) all in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
*ch 9, sc in the next ch-3 sp ;
[ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp] ;
rep [to] once ;
ch 9, rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st

Round 18 : dc in the 1st 3 dc ;
(3 dc ; ch 3, 3 dc) all in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
dc in the next 3 dc ;
*ch 9, sc in the next ch-3 sp ;
[ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp] ;
dc in the next 3 dc ;
ch 9, rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp ;
dc in the next 3 dc* ;
rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st

In our final round we will work a ch-3 picot once again. This time we will work in the ch-3 sp between the 6-dc sets.
You could choose to add a bead at this point.  In that case you will work (3 dc ; ch 1 + bead + ch 1, 3 dc) instead of the picot.
Round 19 : dc in the 1st 6 dc ;
(3 dc ; ch 1 + picot + ch 1, 3 dc) all in the 1st ch-3 sp ;
dc in the next 3 dc ;
*ch 9, sc in the next ch-3 sp ;
[ch 3, sc in the same ch-3 sp] ;
dc in the next 6 dc ;
ch 9, rep (to) in the next ch-3 sp ;
dc in the next 6 dc* ;
rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Block as needed according to yarn instructions.
