Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k Start Round 1 : with a magic circle and work 6 sc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 2 : 2 sc in the 1st sc ;
2 sc in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 3 : sc in the 1st sc ;
(ch 4, sc in the next sc) ;
*sc in the next sc ; rep (to) once* ;
rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st.
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Round 4 : (dc 3-tog ; ch 3, dc 3-tog) all in the 1st ch-4 sp ;
*ch 3, rep (to) in the next ch-4 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
Round 5 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ;
5 dc all in the same 1st ch-3 sp ;
(ch 1, 5 dc in the next ch-3 sp)
rep (to) all around ;
ch 1, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
Round 6 : sl-st into the 1st ch-1 sp ;
sc in the same 1st ch-1 sp ;
(ch 6, sk next 5 dc, sc in the next ch-1 sp)
rep (to) all around ;
ch 6, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
Triple / Treble crochet 2-tog : trc 2-tog : [yo 3 times around hk, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 3 times (4 lps on hk) ;
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 3 times. One trc 2-tog made.
This video tutorial at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0y4BbgDTbs shows you how to use the trc 2-tog to decrease
And this video shows you how to use it a decorative stitch.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCQOBc83Vxo
In the following round we work a trc 2-tog on the sc between the ch-6 sps ; BUT we work it as a split stitch, with one part of the trc 2-tog in one sc and the 2nd part of the same trc 2-tog in the next sc.
So before we start the round lets visualise this and understand it for easy movement forward. Let's call this our Split trc 2-tog
SPLIT Triple / Treble crochet 2-tog : trc 2-tog : [yo 3 times around hk, insert hk in 1st sc, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] once more (2 lps on hk) ; rep [to] in the next sc 2 times (4 lps on hk)
{yo, draw through 2 lps on hk} 3 times. One Split trc 2-tog made.
This stitch will look like a "V" st.
Round 6 : sl-st into the 1st sc ;
(Split trc 2-tog over this sc and the next sc) ;
*ch 5, rep (to) once*
rep *to* all around ;
ch 5, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
Round 7 : sl-st into the 1st ch-5 sp ;
(dc 3-tog ; ch 3, dc 3-tog) all in the 1st ch-5 sp ;
*ch 3, rep (to) once in the next ch-5 sp*
rep *to* all around ;
ch 3, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
Round 8 : sl-st into the 1st ch-5 sp ;
(ch 5, sc in the next ch-3 sp)
rep (to) all around ;
ch 5, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
Round 9 : sl-st into the 1st ch-5 sp ;
(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp)
rep (to) all around ;
ch 5, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
Round 10 : sl-st into the 1st ch-5 sp ;
(ch 7, sc in the next ch-5 sp)
rep (to) all around ;
ch 7, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
Round 11 : sl-st into the 1st ch-7 sp ;
(ch 7, sc in the next ch-7 sp)
rep (to) all around ;
ch 7, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
Now if you want a slightly larger doily you may continue increasing rounds or you may decide to finish off in the next round, as I have.
As mentioned at the start, you could either end with a round of beads or a round of picot in the final round.
Round 12 : sl-st into the 1st ch-7 sp ;
(ch 5 + bead + ch 5, sc in the next ch-7 sp)
rep (to) all around ;
ch 5 + bead + ch 5, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook). For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
Here’s a great video https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4sAs we're working a ch-3 picot in the middle of a chain, here's what I'd do.
(Ch 8, sl-st in the 3rd ch from hk ; ch 5 ; sc in the next ch-7 sp). The ch-8 and then slipping into the 3rd st will give you a ch 5 + ch 3 picot.
Alternate Picot Round 12 : sl-st into the 1st ch-7 sp ;
(ch 5 + picot + ch 5, sc in the next ch-7 sp)
rep (to) all around ;
ch 5 + picot + ch 5, and join to the 1st st with a sl-st
