ADORABLE EMOJI BLANKET

Adorable Emoji Blanket - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet

If you've been following me, you'll know that I've made emoji's as granny squares before.. This time I've made larger squares and with lesser 'holes' .. so come along and let's see how we work this.

Thank you for joining me.

Come along then and let’s work on this beautiful creation together.

Materials used : Today I’ve used ~ 700 gms in different colors of Oswal 4-ply acrylic yarn with a 5 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle & fabric glue to seal ends
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic ; Laura or unbranded  knitting cotton as well as  acrylic yarns
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Size made : 32" x 40"
This is only given to you to get a general idea of how much yarn you may need.
You can make this to any size to just use up your yarn.
Difficulty level : Intermediate to Advanced Skill level.

Stitches used :
How to hold your yarn in crochet : https://youtu.be/FwOlCbGdbqY
Starting slip knot :  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw
Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot :  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

Abbreviations used :  (Using U.S terminology)
lp(s) : Loop(s)                  sc : Single crochet
dc : Double crochet         sp : Space
sl-st : Slip stitch               ch : Chain
st(s) : Stitch(es)               hk : Hook
yo : Yarn Over

Instructions : (Using U.S terminology)
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

What stitches do you need to know for today's project

What is a chain stitch ?  https://youtu.be/pXx5ukBjKkY

What is a crochet slip stitch : https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

There are two types of granny squares here - one that sports the emoji and a plain one that I've added between the emoji squares.

Pattern 1 : Emoji granny square :
Start Round 1 : Using yellow yarn :
with a magic circle and work 12 dc in it.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12 dc)

Round 2 : Using yellow yarn :
2 dc in the 1st dc and in each dc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (24 dc)

Round 3 : Using yellow yarn :
2 dc in the 1st dc
(dc in the next dc ; 2 dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (36 dc)

Round 4 : Using yellow yarn :
2 dc in the 1st 2 dc
(dc in the next 2 dc ; 2 dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (48 dc)

Round 5 : Using yellow yarn :

Fasten off yellow yarn.  Attach whatever background color yarn you want. I have used white.

Round 7 : (3 dc ; ch 2, 3 dc) in the 1st ch-5 sp ;
*[5 dc in the next ch-5 sp] ;
rep [to] once ;
rep (to) once* ;
rep *to* all around
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Square formed - the (to) form your four corners.
We will now work (to) in each corner and we will work 1 dc in each dc all around

Rounds 8 - 9 : (3 dc ; ch 2, 3 dc) in the 1st ch-2 corner sp ;
*dc in each dc till the next ch-2 corner sp ;
rep (to) in the next ch-2 corner sp* ;
rep *to* all around
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Now here's where the fun starts
Depending on the yarn and hook you are using, you may get a different sized square.
I got an 8" square.
So work as many rounds as needed to get the size you want per square.
You will need to figure out how many squares you need for the blanket size you are working for.

How do I figure how many squares I need?
After you finish Round 7, place your square down and measure it.  Calculate the number you'd need by multiplying the size of each square.
So if you want a blanket of 40", you can work four 10" squares ; or five 8" squares or eight 5" squares (got it?)

And then for the real fun, bring out your embroidery needle and black yarn and embroider in the face features for your emojis.

For my eyes :
Start Round 1 : using black yarn : with a magic circle with 6 sc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.  (6 sc)

Round 2 : using black yarn : 2 sc in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12 sc)
Fasten off and leave a tail for attachment

We will work dc in each dc all around and (dc ; ch 1, dc) in the corner ch-1 sp
Round 2 : Using white yarn :
dc in the 1st dc and in each dc till the corner ch-1 sp ;
*(dc ; ch 1, dc) in the corner ch-1 sp ;
*dc in each dc till the next corner ch-1 sp ;
rep *to* all around ;
