X for XYLOPHONE GRANNY SQUARE

X for Xylophone granny square - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet

Today we continue working on a blanket with all alphabets -  & its X for Xylophone - the alphabets we all grew up with.   Remember to scroll till the bottom of this blog for the earlier alphabets.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.

All my blogs can be printed.  Find the printer friendly (green) link on the right hand side and at the bottom of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.

Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.

Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

To purchase this or similar yarn online, click here to buy your yarns online via Amazon.  While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used local Oswal 4-ply acrylic with a 4 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
General yarn info : I’d say you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this lovely project.

The Xylophone motif
For today's X for Xylophone granny square, I've decided to work the square fully in white and then add in a xylophone motif
The basic granny square
Start Round 1 : (with white color) with a magic circle and work 12 dc in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12 dc)

Round 2 :  dc in the 1st dc & in each dc all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (24 sts)

Round 3 : dc in the 1st dc ; dc in the next dc ;

rep (to) all around ;
dc in the last dc
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (36 sts)

Round 4 :  3 dc in the 1st st ;
(hdc in the next st ; sc in the next 6 sts ; hdc in the next st ; 3 dc in the next st) ;
rep (to) all around ;

For your convenience, you could place a marker in the centre corner st (which is the 2nd dc of the 3-dc set in each corner)
Now we can work in both loops.

Round 5 : dc in the 1st st & each st till the corner marked st ;
3 dc in the corner marked st ;

Move markers

Rounds 6 & 7 : Rep Round 6
Fasten off and weave in ends.
XYLOPHONE MOTIF 1
Xylophone motif detail
The xylophone has about 8 bars and you can choose 8 colors for this creation.
Start Row 1 : (Using color 1) : with 17 fhdc.  Turn.
Fasten off Color 1, add color 2

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Half double crochet 2-tog : hdc 2-tog : [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp] (3 lps on hk) ; insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp (4 lps on hk) ; yo, draw through all 4 lps on hk.  One hdc 2-tog made.

Check the video tutorial at https://youtu.be/jdaXTr7Lcig

Row 2 : (Using color 2) : hdc 2-tog over the 1st 2 sts ; hdc in each st till last 2 sts ; hdc 2-tog over the last 2 sts.  Turn.
Fasten off Color 2, add color 3

Rep Row 2, changing color every row till you have 3 sts left.
Fasten off and leave a long tail for fastening.

Finishing :
I have decided to use a black yarn and then run a row of sts all the way between each row and all along the edge.
Then I have made an embroidered set of sticks using french knots for the tops of the stick and then a set of back stitch (embroidery stitches) for the rods.
Use the photo as guide.
Remember to fasten off and weave in ends at the end of each square for ease in finishing.
May I also suggest that you block your squares before joining (as per yarn instructions).

Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.

Single crochet to join :  https://youtu.be/6FXoW_47_dI
