U for UMBRELLA GRANNY SQUARE
Today we continue working on a blanket with all alphabets - & its U for Umbrella - the alphabets we all grew up with. Remember to scroll till the bottom of this blog for the earlier alphabets.

Materials used : Today I’ve used local Oswal 4-ply acrylic with a 4 mm crochet hook ;
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red rose ; Red rose metallic or unbranded knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
General yarn info : I’d say you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this lovely project.

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.

How to carry your yarn when using two colors : https://youtu.be/NuascBU3pxQFor today's pattern I decided to have a tri-colored umbrella,so I have started with 3 colors of yarn plus the background color - so a total of four colors in my magic circle. You can either work like I have with multiple colors, or you can work with just one color for the umbrella. You can either carry the yarn along or fasten off and re-attach at the end of the round. Do what suits you best.
Oh using the 3 colors the way I have you get three stripes of color only on one side of your granny square (as you can see).
If you want it all around, you can choose to repeat these instructions all around for the 3 colors, instead of using the background color for the last 6 dc in Round 1.
You will then work the same colors through for Rounds 2 & 3 as well and you'll get a full multi colored umbrella top.
It just makes it a little more complicated with three sets of colors being carried around for 3 rounds - but will give you a totally different effect.
Start Round 1 : (with three colors for umbrella plus background color yarn) with a magic circle and work 2 dc with the three colors in that circle ;
(Change to background color) ; 6 dc in that same circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (12 dc)
Now we will work Rounds 2 & 3 with same color along all the same stitches, and then change to background color and work background color along all those set of sts.
So in my case I have blue, pink and green and I will work blue yarn for the blue stitches, pink on pink and green on green ; with the last set being the background color
Round 2 : (with 1st color) : 2 dc in the 1st dc ;
(with 1st color) : 2 dc in the next dc ;
(with 1st color) : 2 dc in the next dc ;
(change color to background) ; 2 dc in the each dc till end ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (24 sts)
Round 3 : (with 1st color) : 2 dc in the 1st dc ; dc in the next dc ;
(with 1st color) : [2 dc in the next dc ; dc in the next dc] ;
(with 1st color) : rep [to] ;
(change color to background ; fasten off brown color) ;
rep [to] till end ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st. (36 sts)
(Continue only with background color)
Round 4 : sc in the 1st 3 st ; hdc in the next st ;
3 dc in the next st ;
(hdc in the next st ; sc in the next 6 sts ; hdc in the next st ; 3 dc in the next st) ;
rep (to) all around till the last 3 sts ;
sc in the last 3 sts ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st
For your convenience, you could place a marker in the centre corner st (which is the 2nd dc of the 3-dc set in each corner)
Round 5 : dc in the 1st st & each st till the corner marked st ;
3 dc in the corner marked st ;
(dc in each st till the corner marked st ;
3 dc in the corner marked st) ;
rep (to) 2 more times ;
dc in each dc till end ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st
Move markers
Rounds 6 & 7 : Rep Round 6
Fasten off and weave in ends.
UMBRELLA HANDLE : Start Row 1 : Using an embroidery needle and black / brown yarn, embroider in a handle for your umbrella
Remember to fasten off and weave in ends at the end of each square for ease in finishing.
May I also suggest that you block your squares before joining (as per yarn instructions).
Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
