EASY LACY WINE BOTTLE COVER

The Corona virus has locked us all down – but it cannot take away your creative spirit…. And while on spirits , here’s a wine bottle cover for our project today.

You can use this idea to make this to any size and for any bottle.

Materials used : Today I’ve used some (Indian) Anchor knitting cotton yarn with a 2.5 mm crochet hook ; two small bits of elastic or rubber bands.

You could use Red rose knitting cotton as well

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

Difficulty level : Easy to Intermediate

You need to know how to work crochet with elastic.

Abbreviations used : (Using U.S terminology)

lp(s) : Loop(s) sc : Single crochet

dc : Double crochet sp : Space

sl-st : Slip stitch ch : Chain

st(s) : Stitch(es) hk : Hook

yo : Yarn Over sk : Skip

Instruction information

Please note that I start all rows with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.

Today’s creation instructions will be slightly general as I would like that you can adapt it for use of any sized bottle.

This plastic webbed cover is what inspired me to make this fish net like pattern and then I got creative and loved what I have made.

So with just the plastic webbing, I made some flowers using wire and stocking net first. And then thought ummm.. needs something else.. and here’s that something else for you ;)

First off : slight measurement requirements.

Check the largest and smallest round measure for your bottle.

In the case of this wine bottle, the neck is tiny and the base is larger.

Stretch an elastic around the larger part of the bottle (with a little extra for joining) and cut two pieces of elastic of the same length

To get this to fit snugly, we will be working the elastic into the 2^nd (starting and ending) rounds of our project.

Join the two ends of the elastic and form a round (if using a cut piece of elastic and not a rubber band). Now when working the round with elastic, you will hold it behind your work and then just loop the elastic along every time you are crocheting. So you will have both your knitting cotton yarn as well as the elastic for the 2^nd round (starting and ending).

I did something slightly different but found it tricky.. and then thought that this (Round 2) would be a simpler way to do it.

I also wondered if beads would look good here – so if you decide to throw in beads, I’d say work them in the all ch-3 sp rounds, and I’d work ch 1 + bead + ch 1 instead of a ch-3 sp where ever I wanted to add the bead.

Our stitch count for today's pattern is in multiples of 3

Start Round 1 : with fsc in multiples of 3 for the bottom circumference of your bottle. Join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

In this round we need to attach the elastic.

You can work a sc or hdc in each st.

Round 2 : sc in the 1^st fsc and each fsc all around.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;

yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.

Round 3 : sc in 1^st sc ;

(ch 3, sk next 2 sc, sc in the next sc) ;

rep (to) all around.

Join with a sc + hdc to the 1^st st.

Place marker for convenience.

This ensures that you are in the centre of the last ch-3 sp.

In case this is not easy for you, please work ch 3 and join to the 1^st st.
Remember that with each round, you will sl-st into the 1^st ch-3 sp to start.

Round 4 : sc in 1^st ch-3 sp ;

(ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp) ;

rep (to) all around.

Join with a sc + hdc to the 1^st st.

Move marker.

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Round 5 : sc in 1^st ch-3 sp ;

(5 dc in the next ch-3 sp ;

ch 3, sc in the next ch-3 sp) ;

rep (to) all around.

Join with a sc + hdc to the 1^st st.

Move marker.

Round 6 : sc in 1^st ch-3 sp ;

(ch 3, sk next dc, sc in the next dc ;

ch 3, sk next dc, sc in the next ch-3 sp) ;

rep (to) all around.

Join with a sc + hdc to the 1^st st.

Move marker.

Round 7 : Rep Round 4.

Rep Rounds 5 – 7 to get the length you need for your cover.

2^nd last round : sc in the 1^st ch-sp ;

2 sc in the next ch-sp and each ch-sp all around ;

sc in the last / 1^st ch-sp

and join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

In our final round, let’s work a picot stitch.

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3^rd ch from hook). For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5^th ch from hook).

Last Round : sc in the 1^st sc ;

(sc + picot in next sc ; sc in the next 2 sc) ;

rep (to) all around

and join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing :

For a final finishing touch, you could either work a round of picot or our 5 dc all around the 1^st round of fsc.

So re-attach your yarn at that 1^st round and either work the same Last round pattern for picot or work Round 5 variation.

Round 5 variation : sc in 1^st fsc ;

(sk next 2 fsc, 5 dc in the next fsc ;

sk next 2 fsc, sc in the next fsc) ;

rep (to) all around.

Join with a sl-st to the 1^st st.
