A QUICK CIRCULAR PENCIL POUCH
( #Blogaday 28/365 )
Just recently, I posted a blog for a
rectangular pouch, and decided to make a circular pencil case as well. The rectangular pouch had a zipper, and that
could be a lot of ‘work’, but here, I thought we could go the ‘easy way’ and
just add a button, and see if this works for you.
The beauty of this pattern again, is
that this one too uses just about one cone of yarn.
Thank you for joining me.

This is my original pattern. Thank you for joining me as we work on this
pattern together.
Materials used : Today I’ve used about one cone of our Indian Polyester silky purse
yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook ;
This yarn is not specific for this pattern. Use any yarn with a suitable hook to make today's creation.
Abbreviations used :
ch : chain ch-sp : chain space
sp : space rep : Repeat
fsc : Foundation single crochet
dc : Double crochet
Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern. For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.
Let’s start off with a visualization of what
we’re creating here today.
I am going to
start with a magic circle and then work in rounds, increasing each round till
we get it to the size that we want for the base of our bag.
Once we think we have it round / wide enough, we
will stop increases, and start working up the sides of our pouch, and continue
till we have the height needed for the pouch.
Simple enough, right? Let’s get started.
I have also decided to use two colours. So I have a Main Color (MC) which is pink,
and then a Contrast Color (CC) which is red.
Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps. One sc made. Check out the video at
https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k
Start (using MC)
with a magic circle
and work 12 sc in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st
sc.
Round 1 : (using
MC)
sc in the 1st sc ;
(2 sc in the next sc ; sc in the next sc) ;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Now here’s where it gets fun.
How quickly do you want to complete your
project?
Depending on that, you can
choose to work a sc , hdc or dc in each st all around.
I have worked in sc all around, so that’s what I
am going to write in my instructions.
Round 2 : (using
MC)
sc in the 1st 2 sc ;
(2 sc in the next sc ; sc in the next 2 sc)
;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Round 3 : (using
MC)
sc in the 1st 3 sc ;
(2 sc in the next sc ; sc in the next 3 sc)
;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Round 4 : (using
MC)
sc in the 1st 4 sc ;
(2 sc in the next sc ; sc in the next 4 sc)
;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
At this point, check if you think that the round
you have made is large enough for you.
If yes, then we will stop increases now and work our bag along the
length.
If no, then continue one more increase till you
feel you are happy with the size.
To get a neat bottom rim, we will work in the
back loops of the stitches.
Check how to work a sc-blo (or single crochet
back loop only) in the links above.
Single crochet back loop only (sc-blo) : Here is an easy video tutorial
Round 5 : (using
MC)
sc in 1st sc ;
sc-blo in
the next sc and each sc all around.
Join
with a sl-st to the 1st st.
This is the last round of the base.
We will now work without any increase and
this will make the top become cylindrical and grow lengthwise.
Half Double Crochet : Hdc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps. One hdc made.
Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at
https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8
Round 6 : (using
CC)
hdc in 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Round 7 – 9 : (using
MC)
sc in 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Rep Rows 6 – 9 :
till you have a pencil case of the length you need.
It does not matter which round or colour you
stop with, as this is not important to the pattern. All that matters is that your pencil(s) and
pens fit in properly.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
The lower part of your cute little bag is
complete.
For the top (flap) portion : Rep
Rounds 1 – 9 once.
This will give you a
flap that you need to attach to the top of the case.
You may decide NOT to use the CC colour for
the top flap portion, or you may decide to add more CC to make the top more
flamboyant.
Go ahead, create and be different!
In our final row, mark where you want to attach
your button. Also decide which button you are going to use, so that you can
decide how many chain you will need to go comfortably around the button. I need
about 5 ch for my button, and want a nice long holding chain, so am working
according to my fancy.
Row 10 : sc in each
st till you reach the marked st ;
ch 20 ; Turn and work along this chain,
sk the next 5 ch and work an sc in each of the next 15 ch till the flap end ;
continue to work an sc in each sc all the way around the flap
and join with a
sl-st to the 1st st.
Finishing :
Now here’s where you get to decide if you want
to line your bag. If you do, please go
ahead and line the bag and the top portion first. You could use a piece of plastic or card against
the top and bottom circular / oval portions, to get the pencil case to ‘stand’
on its own. I have opted not to do any of this.
Once you have completed lining the two portions,
you need to attach the top flap to the bottom bit.
Place the top flap securely, pin it down and run
a line of stitching around the back of the case, such that the flap opens up
neatly, without the contents to falling out.
Once the flap is in place, check where the
button and button hole go, and attach your button in securely.
I feel that this cute pouch will also work for
toiletries, and if you are using it as such, then ensure that you make it as
long as your favourite hair and eye liner brushes :)
Have fun creating something beautiful and hope
the recipient loves it too.
