H for HAT GRANNY SQUARE
Today we continue working on a blanket with all alphabets - & its H for Hat - the alphabets we all grew up with. Remember to scroll till the bottom of this blog for the earlier alphabets.

Materials used : Today I’ve used local Oswal 4-ply acrylic with a 4 mm crochet hook ;
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red rose ; Red rose metallic or unbranded knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
General yarn info : I’d say you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this lovely project.

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.

For our hat granny square, I have been inspired by the free pattern at http://moniquesplace67.blogspot.com/2011/05/joepie.html
As i wanted my square to look the same as the earlier ones, I have changed the pattern just a bit
I worked till Round 6 as per pattern - working in the tie and working in sc till now.
We end at 24 sts.
For my Round 7 I worked a little differently.
Like the designer, I worked with Color 1 for this part of my hat motif.
Round 7 : dc in the 1st 2 sts ; 2 dc in the next st ;
(dc in the next 2 sts ; dc in the next st) ;
rep (to) all around and join with a sl-st to the 1st st (36 sts)
Round 8 : (sc ; ch 2, sc) all in the 1st st ;
[sk the next st ; rep (to) all in the next st] ;
rep [to] all around and join with a sl-st to the 1st st (12 ch-2 sps)
We will now work our shell patterns in the ch-2 sps just as the designer has
The shell pattern is (hdc ; 3 dc ; hdc) all in the ch-2 sp
Round 9 : Shell pattern all in the 1st ch-2 sp
& in each ch-2 sp all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st (12 shells)
Now that we have finished our cap motif, we can go about making this into a square.
We will work in the spaces between the shells. There is no stitch there, but just that space that joins 2 shells. Got it?
Change to background color. Attach your background color to any space between 2 Shell stitches to start. So when I say 'sp', I mean this sp between 2 Shells.
Round 10 : 5 dc in the 1st sp between 2 Shell sts ;
*(sk next Shell st, 4 dc in the next sp)
rep (to) once ;
sk next Shell st, 5 dc in the next sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st
For your convenience, you could place a marker in the centre corner st (which is the 3rd dc of the 5-dc set in each corner)
Round 11 : dc in the 1st st & each st till the corner marked st ;
3 dc in the corner marked st ;
(dc in each st till the corner marked st ;
3 dc in the corner marked st) ;
rep (to) 2 more times ;
dc in each dc till end ;
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st
Move markers
Round 12 : Rep Round 11
Remember to fasten off and weave in ends at the end of each square for ease in finishing.
May I also suggest that you block your squares before joining (as per yarn instructions).
Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
