I for IGLOO GRANNY SQUARE

I for Igloo Granny Square - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet

Today we continue working on a blanket with all alphabets -  & its I for Igloo today - the alphabets we all grew up with.   Remember to scroll till the bottom of this blog for the earlier alphabets.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.

All my blogs can be printed.  Find the printer friendly (green) link on the right hand side and at the bottom of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.

Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.

Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used local Oswal 4-ply acrylic with a 4 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or  unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Vardhaman acrylic yarns
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
General yarn info : I’d say you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this lovely project.

IGLOO Using white yarn

The igloo motif
Now let's create the small igloo opening.  We will work only in 20 sts back and forth.  You can remove and safely stash the marker away now.
Row 7 : sc in the 1st st ; hdc in the next 20 hdc.  Turn (21 sts)

Row 8 : sc in all the 21 hdc.
When you finish the 21 sts, we will work on a rim for the igloo opening.
So turn and work 3 sts along the 1st edge ; 4 along the top edge of the igloo opening and 3 along the bottom side edge (or a total of 10 sts along the opening).  Turn ; and work one more row of sc all the way down the edge along the 10 sc just worked.

Leave a long tail for attachment and fasten off.
Place the igloo in the centre of the square

Additional optional embroidery
Additional optional embroidery  : To make our igloo look a little authentic, run a round of stitches to denote the ice blocks around the top and opening of the igloo.
Then using an embroidery needle, attach the igloo into the centre of the white granny square made as base. Use the photo as guide.
Remember to fasten off and weave in ends at the end of each square for ease in finishing.
May I also suggest that you block your squares before joining (as per yarn instructions).

Once you have made as many squares as you want for your blanket, use one of these joining methods for a neat join.
