NEWBORN ONESIE SLEEPER

Newborn Onesie Sleeper - a free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet
NEWBORN ONESIE SLEEPER

In the olden days, we would wrap our babies up in soft linen or muslin after their bath and then they'd sleep snug as a bug.  Now we have these lovely onesie sleepers that work the same trick.  I've made mine in soft acrylic, but you could use cotton or linen & bamboo yarn as well.

Thank you for joining me.

This is not my pattern.   The link for the pattern is given below.
I tweaked the pattern a little bit, so here are my tweaks.
If you are not interested in any tweak, scroll down a bit for the pattern instruction link

The pattern is worked top down - which means that the first row / round of stitches that you start with go around the neck
The button opening at the top
Foundation double crochet (fdc) : This is a unique way of starting a project directly with a row of double crochet stitches.  Here is an easy video tutorial https://youtu.be/hjNUYVvyU9k

I thought it would be easier if there was a small button gap (that could be front or back of onesie).
So for the first 4 rows, I worked side to side turning at the end of every row.
I then joined and worked in rounds for the rest of the yoke.

This brings up a small difference in pattern, because the designer starts her armhole 'break' in a different way.
So in case you too decide to make a small button gap, then here are the calculations.

When you end at Round 8, we should have 132 sts.
So a bit of calculation here.
1) You need to count 33 sts on either side of the 1st st, such that you have 66 sts for this side - this is the front (or back, as its a reversible garment)
2) Place markers on both sides.
3) Count off 27 sts (for armhole) on both sides from your first markers and place 2 more markers.
4) Check that you have 66 between both your first and 2nd markers
5) You will work the 1st 19 sts, then skip 27 sts ; work the next 39 sts and skip the next 27 sts and work the final 20 sts.
You will not need to count all these numbers as it is marker to marker - but I've given you a count so you know what you are doing.
At the end of this round, your back and front will have 39 sts each, and your armhole opening will be 27 sts each
6) Continue working the body rounds 11 - 39 as given.
7) I decided to work till end and join with a sl-st , but you could work in spirals as given in the pattern too.  May I suggest that if you chose to work spirally, place a stitch marker in your last st, and move the marker every round for easy calculation of rounds.
8) Continue with the pattern as given.

I found this chart for sleeper sacks a good one to go by.

I found this chart below also was a good one for hoodie calculations

Instead of a hoodie, I made a separate beanie as requested by my client - check the links for loads of beanies at the end of this blog. (Scroll down till after all the blanket and granny square creation links)
