A QUICK RECTANGULAR POUCH

easy crochet pouch, crochet bag
A QUICK RECTANGULAR POUCH
( #Blogaday 27/365 )

This is a really quick project that can be done with one skein of yarn.  I think that one should always have some tiny little gifts ready at home, so that when you have a sudden guest with a little one, you can easily spread smiles…. And in keeping with that thought, I decided to make a little bag, which can work as a pencil case as well as a toiletries bag / jewellery case as well.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

This is my original pattern.  Thank you for joining me as we work on this pattern together.

Materials used : Today I’ve used about one cone of our Indian Polyester silky purse yarn with a 4 mm crochet hook
This yarn is not specific for this pattern.  Use any yarn with a suitable hook to make today's creation.

Abbreviations used :
ch : chain              ch-sp : chain space
sp : space             rep : Repeat
fsc : Foundation single crochet
dc : Double crochet

Stitches used :
Starting slip knot : Here’s how you start with a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/lJcqsVcs8cw

Starting slip knot 1 or the Sloppy Slip knot : This is a neat new way to start your work without a slip knot.  https://youtu.be/YfC7KmGpifs

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

Let’s start off with a visualization of what we’re creating here today.
I am going to start with a long fsc foundation chain.  You will keep the chain length as long as you want your pouch to be.  We will work all the way down the length of our chain, and then turn and work around the bottom of the same foundation chain to make a longish oval.  This will form the base of our bag.
We will then work in rounds all the way up to make the sides of our pouch, and continue till we have the length needed.
Simple enough, right? Let’s get started.

I have also decided to use three colours.  So I have a Main Color (MC) which is pink, and then two Contrast Colors (CC 1 and CC 2) which are blue and red.

How to change colors seamlessly : Here’s an easy video tutorial to show you how to change from the Main color to the Contrast or second color of yarn seamlessly.  View it at https://youtu.be/fRzSBja9jno

How to carry your yarn when using two colors : Here’s an easy video tutorial to show you how to carry your yarn along when working with two colours.

Foundation Single Crochet : fsc : To refresh your skill on the fsc, please view this video https://youtu.be/mcT85fwh4mA

Start (using MC) with about 36 fsc
(or as many fsc as you want for the length of your pouch). Turn.

In the following row / round, we will work all the way down the fsc chain,
and then turn at the end, and work around the bottom of the same fsc chain.

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Round 1 : (using MC)
sc in the 1st fsc and in the 34 fsc till the last fsc ;
3 fsc in the last fsc ; Turn
sc in the next 35 fsc till the last (or 1st) fsc ;
2 fsc in that last fsc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Now here’s where it gets fun.  How quickly do you want to complete your project?  Depending on that, you can choose to work a sc , hdc or dc in each st all around.
I have worked in hdc all around, so that’s what I am going to write in my instructions.

Round 2 : (using MC)
hdc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Round 3 - 4 : (using MC)
hdc in 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 5 : (using CC)
hdc in 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 6 – 9 : (using MC)
hdc in 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 10 : (using CC)
hdc in 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Round 11 - 14 : (using MC)
hdc in 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Your little bag is almost complete.
All you need to do is get the lining done (if desired) and then add a zipper on the top.  Please check the top of this blog for ideas on “How to” get this done.

As you can see, I have decided that an unlined bag will work for this purpose, but lining this bag makes it a really soft space to store jewellery – so go for it.

Have fun creating something beautiful and hope the recipient loves it too.
